I have long been a fan of Riceworks snacks since they seem to be one of those brands that you can find pretty much anywhere you might be – kind of like an old gluten-free friend looking back at you from the shelf.  I typically tend to grab a small bag with my lunch when I am looking for a salty treat.  I also always grab a bag (or three) of Riceworks when I am entertaining.  They one of those snacks that both non-gluten-free and gluten-free guests love pairing perfectly with all kinds of dips and toppings – not to mention they are strong enough to hold-up to the thickest of dips without breaking into pieces.

When Riceworks reached out asking if I would like to try some of their newer products I was definitely on-board.  I am pretty much a creature of habit when it comes to my gluten-free snacks and my relationship with Riceworks was no different – I almost always only picked the Salsa Fresca and Sweet Chili varieties so the changes to try some new flavors and products helped push me out of my flavor comfort zone.

I received a selection of six flavors including: Sweet Chili, Sea Salt, Sundried Tomato with Mediterranean Herbs & Cheese, Rosemary Garlic & Balsamic Vinegar, Spicy Spanish Cheese Blend, and Wild Ricework’s Sea Salt & Black Sesame.

Now I have had the Sweet Chili and Sea Salt before but all of the other flavors were new to me.  The Sundried Tomato with Mediterranean Herbs & Cheese had a nice balance between fragrant basil and a hint of tanginess from the tomato and cheese.  I paired these with a feta and pepperdew dip made fresh by a local market and the resulting flavor combination reminded me of the time I spent in France living on the Mediterranean.

The Rosemary Garlic & Balsamic Vinegar had a mild hint of rosemary that first hits your palate but you soon notice the rich aged flavor of the balsamic adding a final kick to the flavor portfolio.  I melted some mozzarella on these and made a balsamic reduction that I drizzled over the top and sprinkled some chopped sundried tomatoes in olive oil to make an Italian take on nachos.

The Spicy Spanish Cheese Blend was a real stand-out.  At first bite I was instantly transported back to my pre-celiac diagnosis days when nachos with jalapeños with cheese sauce were a college favorite – you know the movie theater style that were probably more artificial than they were natural.  They were always a guilty pleasure of mine and this flavor of Riceworks was a more sophisticated adult-version (sans artificial flavors as well).  These are coated with a spicy cheese blend that packs a fantastic vinegar punch that helps to elevate the jalapeño flavor without making it too spicy.  I paired them with a fantastic queso fundido with chorizo that I picked-up at my local gourmet market and the flavor combination was truly outstanding.  Trust me – if you come across these in your local market pick-up a bag – you will not be disappointed.

The Wild Riceworks Sea Salt & Sesame was also new to me and they were really very good and I really like their large rectangular shape.  These have a really nice mild flavor and are not overly salty so pair well with everything from cheese to my personal favorite cilantro lime hummus.
