El’s Medleys New Flavors

Monday, March 19th, 2012

My friends at El’s Kitchen sent me samples of their new Medleys flavors of Cheddar and Sour Cream and Onion.   Now I have long been a fan of El’s Bagel Chips and Medleys since I first reviewed those products a while back.  I was really excited to give their new flavors a try.

Now for those of you that are not familiar with El’s Medleys, they are a crunchy gluten-free snack mix that includes a fantastic mix of flaxseed corn chips, pretzels, potato chips, corn nuts, and bagel chips.  I really liked their Original flavor which was quite unique and their new flavors did not disappoint.

First up was the Sour Cream & Onion variety.  This was a wonderfully tangy flavor combination that paired the tart sour cream with a hint of spiciness from the onion powder.  This flavor really complimented the snack mix without being overpowering allowing you to really enjoy the complex flavors of the bagel and corn chips.

The Cheddar flavor was equally as delicious and had a great cheddar bite to it.  It too perfectly complimented the actual snack mix base without stealing the show.  The other nice thing about this flavor was that it was not overly salty as is often the case with cheese flavors that I have come across.

The fact that El’s products are all natural helps explain why the flavors taste exactly like they read and by just looking at the ingredients on the package – you can actually recognize all the ingredients listed.  I am all about supporting smaller gluten-free companies that are making products outside of the proverbial box and El’s Kitchen is definitely helping to make the gluten-free landscape even more delicious.  You can learn more about El’s Kitchen on their Web site and check out their complete product portfolio – you can even order right from their site and have their products shipped directly to your front door.

EL’s Medleys and Bagel Snaps

Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Yes, you read that correctly – honest to goodness gluten-free bagel chips!  I was over the moon when I received an e-mail from El’s Gluten Free Snacks a while back with the promise of a fabulous gluten-free snack mix and bagel chips.  Was I apprehensive?  Absolutely.  I mean, let’s face it; gluten-free bagels are hit-or-miss.  I have had great and I have had, well, not so great.  As a good bagel is the base for a good chip, I had my fingers crossed that El’s would get it right.  Well, not only did El’s get it right, I can safely say that these are the best bagel chips I have come across – gluten-free or otherwise (remember, I had 20 plus years of living a gluten-filled lifestyle before my diagnosis).

So, first up was the bagel chips.  Wow, wow, wow!  I mean, not only were the chips themselves the perfect consistency – read REAL bagel – the flavoring that El’s uses is, in a word, addictive.  It is actually a complex mix of spices but you’ll immediately notice the slight kick of chili paired with a perfect cumin undertone.  A sweet hint of molasses and honey helps round out these perfectly flavored chips.  I could not stop eating these and within minutes – the entire bag was gone.  So, lesson one – order more than one bag.

The Medleys snack mix was a mix of gluten-free corn chips, pretzels, corn nuts, potato chips, and, you guessed it, bagel chips.  I was in gluten-free crunch overload but again, the flavor was out of this world.  This mix had a smoky Worcestershire coating that was slightly sweet, slightly savory and not overly salty.  The flavor was likely one of the most complex I have come across.  On top of the rich Worcestershire flavor notes you’ll find hints citrus that truly make this a standout.

Oh, and for those of you with other dietary restrictions or allergies, El’s are dairy-, egg-, and nut-free.  They are also all natural and non-GMO – nice!

You can learn more about El’s products or place an order on their Web site as well as find out where you can find them near you.

My Number 3 GF Favorite Thing for 2009

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Continuing with the Indian theme of my recent favorite thing, I have chosen these wonderful Bhuja Indian snacks from Majans for the number 3 slot in my Favorite Things series. The taste and texture of these snacks will have you wondering Is this really gluten-free? Thankfully, yes they are and they are really unique to boot. I always have a few bags on-hand as you never know when guests will pop-in or when a snack craving will strike.

I came across these snacks when I was putting together my gluten-free contingency travel pack for my previous trip. I actually sampled two varieties but will start with the original variety. What’s nice about this snack is that you really feel like you are indulging in a gluten-filled snack. There are wonderfully crunchy multi-grain noodles (from chick pea, yellow peas, and some GF starches) that are just AMAZING paired with wonderfully flavorful rice crackers scattered throughout. The mix is also chock-full of green peas, peanuts, and sweet sultanas – all in a great spicy coating that has a bit of a kick but is not overly powering.

The spicy variety makes for a piquant surprise and makes for a great snack that will definitely please the pickiest of guests. The spicy version is much like the original mix but features a eider crunch noodle throughout in lieu of the assorted rice crackers featured in the mild variety. If you are a fan of spicy then I highly recommend picking-up a package and giving it a try. These snacks go extremely well with cocktails (making a great little bar mix) as the savory snacks subtle saltiness with hint of sweetness makes for the perfect combination with a nice wine, gluten-free beer or cider, or mixed cocktail. You can check out their complete product line on their Web site.
