New Products Reviewed: Schaer Meranetti and Cioccolini

Wednesday, November 21st, 2012

I picked these sweet treats up in Geneva, Switzerland at the Urban Bio Market – a great health food store that has an impressive selection of gluten-free items as well.  I immediately noticed the familiar Schär yellow packaging on the shelf so thought I would try some of their products that are not available in the United States.

First up was the Meranetti which are chocolate cupcakes filled with gianduja chocolate cream.  These are individually wrapped (four to a box) which makes for a perfect portion controlled snack – not to mention it keeps each cupcake moist.  What’s nice about these cupcakes is that they are not overly sweet but have a rich cocoa flavor that really comes through.  The filling is also not too sweet with the cocoa flavor perfectly complemented with a subtle hint of hazelnut.

The Cioccolini are small chocolate cookies with a chocolate cream filling hidden inside.  Again, these were not overly sweet with a subtle sweetness that allowed the chocolate notes to really shine.  While these were good, I was expecting the cream centers to be soft and they were in fact hard.  I am not sure if this was the normal filling consistency or if these were just a bit off.  They were perfectly sealed and one year within the consume by date so not sure what was up with them.  They were still good but would have preferred a softer center.

I love traveling around the world and seeing what some familiar companies are doing in local regions.  Hopefully more and more of the international brands with a U.S. presence with continue to expand their product offerings by bringing over some of their popular regional products.

Now if I can just figure out why Schär in the United States is pronounced incorrectly sans umlaut, even by the brand…drives this German-educated Celiac nuts :-) .

My GF Homage To 2010

Friday, December 31st, 2010

Okay, so I know it is somewhat cliché to do a year-end round up of top picks for the previous 12 months.  So rather than doing a Favorite Things post, I thought I would just revisit some of the gluten-free places, organizations, and products that made an impact on me in 2010.  I chose ten – I am a bit OCD and it seemed like a good solid number – things that made my gluten-free journey a bit more delicious.  They are listed in no particular order and if a product is not on the list it does not mean I am still not a fan.  This list is comprised of some new items that came across my path in 2010 that I would like to re-visit with you in my last post of 2010.  So here we go…

De Rosa’s Natural Fine Foods: This Staten Island, New York company has perfected the heat-and-eat gluten-free Italian meal.  From Stromboli to calzones to chicken marsala – De Rosa’s has it all and they are all fabulous.

Sheffa Foods Snack Mixes: Completely new to me and a very pleasant surprise.  These crispy treats are a unique mix of nuts and seeds paired with sweet or savory goodies – perfect for cocktail time.  Their salad topper is also out of this world.

The Melting Pot Restaurants of Metro New York: Who knew that  a franchise could do gluten-free so well?  These locations in Darien (CT), Westwood (NJ), and White Plains (NY) offer unique (and delicious) gluten-free options for every course.  There is even gluten-free cheesecake and brownies to dip in molten chocolate for dessert.  I mean, how can you go wrong?

The National Foundation for Celiac Awareness:  I was able to take part in their fabulous Appetite for Awareness 2010 in Philadelphia which set the bar for gluten-free events.  Not only does this organization do great things to help further the recognition and understanding of Celiac disease they provide great opportunities for Celiacs to learn, mix, and mingle throughout the year.

Gluten-Free Bisquick:  Thanks to my friends at General Mills for making a gluten-free version of an old kitchen staple that is every bit as good as the original – just sans gluten.  Fresh pancakes once again became a staple in my weekend breakfasts.

Ellie’s Country Delights Stews: Based on the far East End of Long Island, New York (my childhood home) Ellie makes quite possibly the best thing you will ever pour out of a jar.  These are wholesome stews that are so versatile across a range of recipe uses.

Schär: I have been a long-time fan of all their products but their gluten-free par-baked baguettes were a true stand out this past year for me.  Just heat and eat.  Fresh, crisp, hot gluten-free bread straight from the oven.

Happy Belly Bags: What’s not to love about gluten-free goodie bags that address not only gluten-free but a range of food allergies.  These are perfect to ship for a variety of occasions and the variety of gluten-free items available was amazing.

Rudi’s Gluten-Free Breads: Three varieties of great bread that really caught my attention this year.  Their Cinnamon Raisin bread is simply out of this world – proving that great ingredients make great products.  They also have a great cause effort going at the moment with the NFCA.

Pizzeria Uno’s Chicago Grill: I have never been a fan of chain restaurants but have to say that Uno’s gluten-free menu was an astounding surprise that I came across this past summer.  It is so nice to be able to pop-in, grab a gluten-free beer, and pizza.  Oh, and the gluten-free pizza is actually really good.

Here’s wishing everyone a healthy and fabulous gluten-free 2011.

Schar Event N.Y.C., Living a Gluten Free Lifestyle

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

I was so happy when I received an invitation about two months ago to attend a Schär luncheon and presentation here at Espace here in New York City.  I have long been a tremendous fan of their products and quite honestly when their products appeared at my local grocer, it opened up a new world of taste for me.

The event was really very lovely with a gluten-free cocktail hour that gave attendees time to mix and mingle.  I met some extremely interesting fellow Celiacs as well as a host of medical professionals, journalists, and food industry folks.  The entire afternoon would feature recipes that included items from the Schär product portfolio.  The cocktail hour kicked it off with passed antipasti that included: Mixed Mezze (Tapenade, Caponata, Baba Ghanoush, Feta, and Haloumi cheese); Assorted Bruschette with heirloom tomato, green olive, and cucumber dill; and Mini Artisanal Pizza with goat cheese and pest, roasted artichoke with Manchego, and Margherita with buffalo mozzarella.  It was an absolute dream to have passed hors d’oeuvres and being able to indulge without having to worry about gluten.

After the initial mix and mingle we headed into the main room for lunch.  Again, it was great to finally put real faces to names that had until then only existed online.  I was seated with a fascinating mix of people, from a fabulous health coach to a cookbook author to representatives from the Long Island Celiac association and even GFSoupmom (who works for a fabulous company that makes GF soups I must try).  Each table also had a representative from Schär USA.  The group could not have been nicer and the conversation was so engaging.

I know, you want to know what was for lunch?  Well, Espace and Schär did not disappoint.  The first course was a baby arugula salad with goat cheese crostini in a citrus white balsamic dressing.  It was funny that someone made the comment these are the first thing I normally have to remove referring to the cheese-topped crostini – so true.  For the main course there was a choice of herb crusted fluke with fusilli in a heirloom tomato/basil sauce or Stuffed chicken breast with ricotta and red peppers over penne and mixed baby vegetables.  I had the chicken which was really very good.  It was breaded with Schär bread crumbs (as was the fish) and the stuffing was actually very good.  For dessert there was an amazing Tiramisu and the table was presented with a selection of Schär cookies and chocolate covered strawberries.  The Tiramisu was out of this world.

Now the afternoon was not just about eating – though it definitely was a major part.  There were four very informative presenters throughout the afternoon.  First up was Dr. Alessio Fasano who many of you already know as he’s the Director of the Center for Celiac Research at the University of Maryland.  He gave a truly informative presentation that started with the history of Celiac disease which, I personally found to be amazing.  He then presented some of his research which was equally as interesting.  The sheer numbers of both total Celiacs and the cost associated with properly diagnosing across a range of risk categories was staggering.

Next up was Schär USA’s Director of Nutritional Services Anne Roland Lee who talked about living a balance (and delicious) gluten-free lifestyle.  We all know that as Celiacs we miss out on some of the fortification that others get from gluten-rich foods.  She pointed out that traditional gluten-rich breads are fortified and essentially regulated by the F.D.A. – there are no such standards for gluten-free products.  Schär actually uses alternative gluten-free grains in their products to help provide a more well-balanced option for Celiacs and those with gluten intolerance. Schär is committed to providing Celiacs with great tasting and healthful options which is most appreciated because being Celiacs often presents enough challenges.

Hannes Berger, the president and CEO of Schär USA address the group next and gave insight into the history of the company and some future development plans for the company in the United States.  Donna George, vice president of Schär USA also spoke briefly on where the company was looking to expand.

The final speaker was perhaps the most riveting.  Colin Leslie is an 18 year old with Celiac disease who had what can only be describe as a horrific road to diagnosis that was riddled with misdiagnoses for a host of conditions he never actually had.  His story was not that different from many, who after sometimes years of misdiagnoses, finally meet the one doctor who puts it all together and changes your life.  What makes Colin so remarkable is that he has been a Celiac advocate since he was 13 starting his own walk for the disease to raise money and awareness for Celiac disease.  I highly recommend that you head over to his Web site to learn more about him and his walk.  Truly inspiring.

When we left we were presented with a fantastic swag bag of Schär product and there was one surprise in there – their new par baked Mini Baguettes which I have not seen in the United States.  I cannot wait to pop them in the oven and give them a try.

The fantastic Tiramisu
