Time Again for The Weekly Update

Friday, February 4th, 2011

Yet, another week has come and gone.  I simply cannot believe that we are already into February.  Here’s hoping for a swift end to winter and an accelerated coming of spring.  One good thing that has come out of all this nasty winter weather is a host of product reviews as I basically stuff my face when the weather prohibits my movements.

So what’s new this week you ask?  Well, let’s take a look…

New Product Reviews:

Okay, so this week’s two new product reviews can actually be found by just scrolling down a bit as I featured them both in my blog.  Eventually they will also live in my Product Review section but sometimes I like to call special attention to products that not only taste great but have interesting stories as to how and why they got started and involved with the Celiac world.  So I tip my hat to this week’s featured products.  Also, direct links always make life easier.

The Crab Ladies Gluten-Free Crab Cakes

You are probably wondering how on earth I managed to pull off a shellfish-based review.  Easy…I had my very own GFM Mom take this one on.  She’s a tough critic but see what she had to say about these gluten-free treats from the sea.  Oh, and for the record Mom is not Celiac nor does she follow a gluten-free diet — which really speaks to how good the guten-free version from The Crab Ladies are.  A special thanks to my Mom for taking this on.

Heavenly Hummus

This was a real standout.  All hummus are most definitely not created equally.  I don’t know how they get these two hummus varieties to taste like someone was in your kitching whipping up a batch but that heaven (pun intended) they figured it out.

New Product Review, Heavenly Hummus

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

When Heavenly Hummus reached out to me (thanks, Kathleen) and offered to ship their product to me, I knew it must have been divine intervention.  I am self-professed hummus junky and you’ll never attend a cocktail or dinner party at my place without at least one type of hummus (sometimes two or more) being served.  I love hummus with chips, cracker, veggies, in a nice socca – you name it I like it with hummus.

Now there are tons of hummus flavors and manufacturers on the market.  It seems like every time I go to the market the section keeps expanding.  There are quire a few good ones on the market and some interesting flavor combinations that keep popping up.  So I have to admit, I was not sure what to expect when the Heavenly Hummus arrived.

Well people, let me tell you – all hummus is not created equal.  Heavenly Hummus is quite possibly the closest thing to homemade (and yes I have made my own) I have ever come across.  Perhaps it stems from the fact that there are just a few simple, real, natural ingredients.

First up was the Roasted Red Pepper variety.  This was absolutely amazing.  From the moment it first hits your tongue you get the wonderful bite of the garlic paired perfectly with the subtle nuttiness of the chick peas and perfectly rounded out by the sweetness of the roasted red peppers.  Now, I am not going to lie – I did in fact eat an entire container in one sitting.  It was just that good and not at all heavy so I didn’t even realize it until the container was empty.

The next day (though I was tempted to just make a meal of the hummus the previous evening) I cracked open the plain hummus.  Again, absolutely delicious.  The thing that you will notice with both flavors is the fresh garlic.  It actually tastes like it was just crushed and the hummus whipped up to-order.  The plain version was a favorite of mine because so often plain hummus can be overpowered by or affected by tahini being added to the mix.  Not the case here.  With Heavenly Hummus you can enjoy (and indentify) all of the ingredients in every bite you take – try that with some other brands.

These hummus varieties worked will with potato chips, rice crackers, corn chips – well, you get the idea.  Their robust but perfectly balanced flavor works on everything I could find to use as a vessel for getting it into my mouth.  Seriously, you will not be disappointed with this product and if you serve it to your guests they will likely ask you for the recipe.

I highly recommend that you head on over to their Web site and check out their story and product line.  You can see where they are carried in the Metropolitan New York area as they are in select local retailers and Tri-State Whole Foods.

The Weekly Update

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Another busy week on both professional and personal fronts.  Yet another snowstorm hit New York City which is always fun and quite frankly I am ready for Spring.  The one good thing about being snowed in was I pretty much ate myself senseless so have been working my way through a bunch of new gluten-free products to share with you.

I am officially naming next week the Week of the Reviews and will have several new and exciting product reviews to share.  There’s pretty much something for everyone in the next round of reviews – from Australian cereals to gluten-free Maryland Crab Cakes (which I actually brought in my very own Mom to guest review given my shellfish allergy).

As for this week’s updates…

New Product Reviews:

The Gluten Free Bar
Another throw and go favorite which you can simply toss into your bag and hit the road.

Gluten Free Oats
Certified gluten-free and super versatile these oats helped fill a void that I have missed for some time – maple flavored oatmeal for breakfast.

New GFM.com Facebook Page:

Get Ready for a Cavalcade of Products

Tuesday, January 25th, 2011

With the chaos of the holidays finally wearing off, I am getting back into the swing of things and getting back on a regular posting schedule.  I have been eating myself silly sampling a host of new gluten-free products to share with all of you.  Hey, it’s a tough job, but someone has to do it :-) .  I have even enlisted the help of my very own mother to help out on one fabulous review that I could not indulge in given my other food allergy.  I am always on the hunt for new and exciting products to share and there are some really good ones in the upcoming cache.

Also, don’t forget that not all reviews live here on the blog though I do feature some items here from time to time.  There is an entire section dedicated to product reviews here on the site.  So feel free to head on over and check out the complete listing of reviews neatly arranged by category.

Finally, check back here every Friday for the Weekly Update – your one stop shop for all that’s new on the site for the previous week.  Sometimes it’s just nice to ahve everything in one place.  So here’s to a fabulous 2011 and wishing you all a delicious New Year.

New Feature, Weekly Update

Friday, January 14th, 2011

As many of my updates across my site are often in different sections throughout the week, I thought I would add a weekly round-up post on Friday to let you know what’s new on GFM.com. So, let’s get right to it…

New Product Review:
Duane Reade deLish Brand Animal Cookies
These sweet little animals are a throwback to my childhood – okay, and most of my adult life.

Crunchmaster Baked Rice Crisps, Toasted Sesame
Available in Costco of all places, these are definitely a new favorite. Best of all I can buy in bulk – so much for portion control.

New Recipe:
Chiffonade of Brussels Sprouts with Pancetta
A regular standby in my weekly repertoire. What not to like? I mean doesn’t pancetta make everything better?

New News:
GFM Featured in MSNBC.com Travel Article
So happy to have been included in Jane L. Levere’s article on the luxury hotel chain Fairmont now catering to guests with dietary restrictions across its entire global portfolio.

Definitely a busy week but lots of exciting updates scheduled for next week – so stay tuned and thanks for stopping by.

Welcome Aboard.

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

Thanks to the recent MSNBC.com Travel article I have had the opportunity to hear from a great number of new friends with either Celiac or other dietary restrictions.  Hey, I even “met” a fellow Celiac with the same shellfish allergy as me – small world indeed.  I welcome any opportunity to help raise awareness of Celiac disease and as my personal mantra is Living Well, Gluten-Free, No Apologies – I don’t let Celiac limit where life takes me.  Anyway, I realize that many of you are likely first timers here on my site so I wanted to take a moment to say “hello” and thanks for stopping by.  I also hope that you’ll become a regular reader as I am constantly on the go and adding new content to the site.

Here’s a quick lay of the land…

On the homepage you will always find a product and restaurant featured.  The do change frequently but I like to call attention to new products or places that I come across.

You can learn more about what makes me tick and my personal journey in the About Me section.  As you’ll see I am a Research Director by day and, well, as I like to put it a gluten-free superhero by night – which basically translates to I am a bit of a lush

As you move your mouse to the right you’ll run across (literally) the Product Review section neatly broken down by the major food groups Desserts, Entrées, Munchies, and Sides.  Each section is updated frequently – as fast as I can stuff the gluten-free goodies in my gob – so please check back often.

Moving further along you will notice the Dining Out section that has Gluten-friendly and everyday restaurants along with my Quintessentially New York Gluten-Free feature – let’s just call it QNYGF – where I eat gluten-free in some of the most iconic restaurants throughout the City.  Moving along is the Recipe section featuring some of my favorites from my kitchen and those of some great gluten-free friends around the globe.  And yes, even my Mom makes an appearance from time to time – she’s one heck of a good cook by the way and pretty darn cool – we have dodged shady alleys in Mong Kok and navigated the souks of Dubai together – to name just a couple of our adventures.

Continuing our little trip we cross into the Resources & Links section featuring everything from relevant organizations to some other very cool Celiac-related blogs.  Which is the perfect segue into my very own blog full of everything gluten-free from what and where I am eating to my travels.  It too gets updated pretty regularly.

As the proverbial train pulls into the station is the Contact section and please don’t be shy.  I love mail and feedback.  So that’s me in a nutshell.  Welcome and I hope to see much more of you.

Product Spotlight, DeRosa’s Natural Fine Foods

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

I love finding local companies that are doing some really unique things to help make the gluten-free landscape more delicious.  One company that I have absolutely fallen in love with is DeRosa’s Natural Fine Foods out of Staten Island, New York.  My friends at DeRosa’s sent me a fantastic sampling of their prepared products and sauces – thanks Umberto.  The assortment was truly amazing and included: a Meat Lover’s Pizza; Garlic Bread; Ham & Cheese Calzone; Chicken Francese; Chicken Marsala; Chicken Parmigiana; Meat and Cheese Lasagna; Vodka sauce (with Corn pasta); and Sliced Almond Amaretto cookies.  All arrived at my door still perfectly frozen and ready to heat and eat in their containers.  Oh, and their prices are amazingly reasonable considering what you get.  All the products I sampled ranged from $5.99-$8.99 – I mean you cannot even order takeout for those prices, so getting freshly prepared meals at these prices is a steal.

Friends of mine from Staten Island actually served me DeRosa’s gluten-free Stromboli on several occasions but I didn’t realize that it was one in the same with this DeRosa’s because my friends always referenced the store that carried them (Pastosa’s Ravioli).  Their Stromboli is so good I would have my one of my friends from Staten Island actually bring them to the office frozen so I could take them home.  Now when we visit them there is always a frozen take-home Stromboli in the freezer waiting for me.  It  is nice to have such thoughtful friends.

So back to the sampling that took me more than a week to work my way through.  I made a point of brining the entrées for lunch at the office during one week and it was probably the best gluten-free Italian I have come across (and I work in the heart of Manhattan so that is saying something).  I have to admit I was skeptical when it came to re-heating the items.  I mean, would they taste live TV dinners?  Absolutely not!  These tasted as though you were having each meal catered to order.  Chef Luciana DeRosa is responsible for these gluten-free masterpieces and clearly knows what she is doing.  I come from an Italian family and when it comes to eating out Italian, I tend to be hyper-critical because I know how real food should taste.  Luciana managed to make gluten-free versions of some of my favorites that were absolutely undetectable as being gluten-free.  You could serve these to anyone, not tell them they were gluten-free and they would never know. Oh, and most items are also lactose- and casein-free.

First up was the Chicken Marsala.  It was wonderfully battered chicken cutlets swimming in just the right amount of a gorgeous dark Marsala sauce.  The sauce was wonderfully complex with the subtle richness of the wine coupled with just the right amount of spices to really make it standout and compliment the chicken perfectly.  The chicken itself was perfectly butchered breast meat cutlets that were absolutely moist and tender (even after being re-heated).

The next day’s lunch was the Chicken Francese – one of my favorite dishes, but not that easy to find in a mainstream gluten-free version.  Once again, the re-heating could not be easier (I used a microwave and every item came out absolutely perfectly cooked).  The sauce was the traditional light buttery sauces with a delicate hint of white wine and just a super subtle lemon undertone.  In a word, delicious.

The following day it was time to try the Meat and Cheese Lasagna.  Now, again I was hesitant to microwave lasagna but this too did not disappoint.  Oh, and for the record, there are oven re-heating instructions as well, but I was pressed for time and didn’t want to first up the oven at my office.  The lasagna was really a home run.  The pasta was cooked perfectly but the true stand out with this and all of DeRosa’s products are their sauces.  Their sauces are simple amazing.  A good sauce is really the foundation for exceptional Italian cooking – get the sauce wrong and you might as well just move on.  The lasagna has just the right balance of cheese and meat all perfectly layered between sheets of fabulous pasta.

The next day would be my final office lunch and was the Chicken Parmigiana.  Like the chicken dishes that came before it, this one was just as delicious.  The cutlets were perfectly breaded (not greasy, which is key) and layered with cheese and the truly delicious DeRosa red sauce.  You simply do not know you are eating gluten-free Italian – it was so good I was actually worried – but needn’t be because DeRosa’s takes food allergies very seriously and if you buy gluten-free you are getting carefully made, super high quality gluten-free dishes.

I decided to make the pizza for lunch one weekend afternoon and one pie was enough for both me and my other half leaving us very full.  Again, the sauce really makes this but there was so many types of meat on this one that it really was a full meal in itself.  It had just the right amount of everything from sauce to cheese and being a meat lover’s pizza did not disappoint in the toppings department.  The pizza went straight from freezer to oven and cooked up crisp on the bottom but stayed moist on top – perfect.

As an interlude throughout the week I snacked on the Sliced Almond Amaretto cookies that instantly transported me back to my childhood.  These cookies are a true stand out.  They are wonderfully moist and chewy, just as I had remembered in my pre-Celiac diagnosis days.  The almond flour (often a staple in Italian desserts) gives such a wonderful texture making for a truly unique cookie.  Again, just the right amount of sweetness coupled with the amaretto flavor make for one perfect cookie.  Topped with sliced almonds, I was in absolute heaven.

I saved the Calzone and Garlic Bread for a small dinner party I was having and included them in my repertoire of hors d’oeuvres one evening.  I baked both in the oven and put the out sliced for my guests to enjoy.  The calzone crust was simply perfect.  It was incredibly delicate versus being extremely rigid as is often the case with gluten-free dough.  It was stuffed full of ham and cheese with a hint of sauce making for the perfect consistency.  The garlic bread was so much like the gluten-version it was scary.  I could not believe that I was eating gluten-free garlic bread – it was amazing.  Just the right amount of cheese partnered with a spicy garlic bite.  None of my guests would believe that these both were gluten-free.

The final item left for tasting was the corn pasta that I topped with DeRosa’s Vodka sauce.  The past was among the best I have come across and really had a nice texture to it allowing it to be prepared perfectly al dente.  The vodka sauce was pretty much creamy perfection.  A beautiful rose-colored creamy sauce that was full of flavor but not at all too heavy.

DeRosa’s is the finest pre-made Italian food that I have come across on my Celiac journey.  They do offer mail order and even catering for those in the local area.  If you find yourself on Staten Island, I highly recommend popping into Pastosa’s to check out DeRosa’s gluten-free offerings.  You likely bump into me filling my cart so my freezer is never without.  But just a word of caution, if there is only one Stromboli left, I will be fighting you for it.  Thanks DeRosa’s for knocking gluten-free Italian out of the ball park.  Be sure to check out their Gluten-Free Catalog for a full listing or products and prices.

Head On Down To The Shack

Thursday, November 4th, 2010

Quick Note: The E.I. Sugar Shack is now the Swansboro Brew Shack Coffee and Desserts Shop, located where else but in nearby Swansboro. Revised contact information can be found at the end of this post. Same great owner and products and Terri just told me they now offer their dry mixes so you can recreate their delicious goodies in the comfort of your own home.

I always find it amazing that sometimes I come across great gluten-free find in the most unexpected of places.  I have been traveling to North Carolina pretty frequently to visit family and never thought I would be able to find half of the gluten-free options that I have.  From well-stocked stores to fantastic restaurants to bakeries.  Oh, and I am not talking about the larger metropolitan areas but rather the beautiful Eastern Carolina coast.  So, I have been hitting the area from Wilmington up to New Bern looking for great gluten-free finds when I am in the area.

On my last visit I was contacted by a bakery on the gorgeous Emerald Isle to come and sample their gluten-free products.  Actually this bakery does sugar-, gluten-free, and regular items as well.  So one beautiful morning I headed out to the Isle to check out the Emerald Isle Sugar Shack.  I was  not quite sure what to expect as I had driven on the road it sits on many times but never noticed it but Terri, the owner, was so friendly in our e-mail and Twitter exchanges I knew I had to stop-by – oh, and the fact that she mentioned something about a new gluten-free item they were working on.  I was intrigued and quite frankly hungry that morning so was ready to see what they had to offer.

The E.I. Sugar Shack is in a normal strip mall type building just off the road and from the outside you have no idea what you are in for.  When you walk in you are instantly transported into beach mode.  Fun seating areas and decorations make you feel more like you are in a beachside café than a storefront (the actual water is located behind and across the street from the store).  As promised, Terri was there to greet me and took to the display cases towards the rear of the store.  She told me before I came to be sure to tell her exactly when I would be coming because the gluten-free items sell out fast.

The cases were filled with gluten- and sugar-free options as well as items for those with no allergies.  You almost felt like you were in an old time bakery complete with glass covered domes housing samples for all to try.  Terri explained that everything is made from scratch and she experiments with various ingredients to get items to turn out the way she wants.  I ended up purchasing quite a few items to take with me (and some delicious gifts from Terri) and I will talk about those in a moment but the main event had to be something I had never even heard of before – gluten-free or otherwise – CAKE BALLS.

Yes, you read it correctly.  Sweet little balls of gluten-free goodness enrobed in chocolate shells.  Think petite fours in a more rounded shape.  Now Terri mentioned she was working on the gluten-free versions of these when we corresponded and I was so eager to give these a try.  She said she came across them while traveling and they had a huge following.  Terri had mini samples on the counter and I did not hold back.  From chocolate to carrot cake to Reese’s, I worked my way through the range and each one was better than the next.  I ordered a bunch of the full-sized options to take with me and enjoy later that evening.  What’s nice about these little treats is that you have a couple (or in my case way more than a couple) and you are not overly full but you feel like you had a real treat.

I was so impressed with all of the gluten-free offerings I wanted to be certain to take some samples with me to try out throughout the course of my visit.  I ended up with a slice of decadent chocolate cake topped with a caramel sauce, quite possibly the best carrot cake muffin I have ever had piled high with cream cheese icing, an apple spice muffin (fabulous), two huge chocolate brownies that were so moist they made me weep, a smorgasbord of cake balls, chocolate chip cookies, and a loaf of sandwich bread.  I also picked up some sugar-free shortbread cookies for my mother (who said they were they best she had come across).

What’s nice about the Sugar Shack is that you can pop-in, grab a coffee and sweet treat, sit down and enjoy it or take it with you.  The prices are the lowest I have come across for homemade gluten-free baked goods and you can mix and match until your heart’s content (just want one cupcake, not a problem, a slice of the cake, you got it).  Terri is just so nice you cannot help wanting to stay and chat.  She mentioned she is working on developing a way to provide mail order service for the cake balls in order to find a method that will protect them on their journey.  Be sure to check out there Web site and if you find yourself on or near Emerald Isle be sure to stop by and treat yourself.  Oh, and be sure to say “hello” to Terri for me.

The Swansboro Brew Shack Coffee and Desserts Shop is located at: 714-6 West Corbett Avenue, Swansboro, North Carolina 28584.  Phone: 910.325.7409

Eat Your Veggies. Product Review, Ellie’s Country Delights

Monday, August 30th, 2010

I recently had the opportunity to sample a new product that I had not yet come across in my travels.  Those of you that have been following me for a while know that I am all about convenience and easy to prepare when it comes to eating gluten-free.  That being said, you also know that I am quite picky and I am not willing to sacrifice taste or quality to get a quick gluten-free fix.

Enter Ellie’s Country Delights – a local (Long Island, New York) company that just happens to make extraordinary products.  Ellie was kind enough to send me a sampling of her product line and I am so glad she did.  First of all, I am not a huge soup person – well at least I thought I wasn’t – but Ellie’s are actually stews and she means it.  Each of her stews is Dairy-, Gluten-, and Wheat-Free.  They are also low in the carbohydrate area and are cholesterol, Trans fat-free, and Vegan…nice.

There are three varieties of stew: Regular Vegetable Stew; Vegetable Stew with Mushrooms; and Spicy Vegetable Stew.  I indulged in all three over the course of a few days and have to say I loved each one.  One jar is actually three servings but I think you all know by know that I was not sharing, so I ate a jar at a time for lunch at the office.  It was probably the easiest lunch I have had to-date – open the jar, place in bowl, done.  Yes you can heat it but I am more or a room temperature type of guy.  So you are probably wondering how they tasted?

In a word DELICIOUS.  No, make that two words – FRESH and DELICIOUS.    Let’s start with the Regular Vegetable Stew variety.  This was chock-full of eggplant, squash, zucchini, peppers, carrot, celery, and onion all in a hearty tomato base.  The balance of flavors is so perfectly balanced that you don’t have to worry about the acidity of the tomatoes overpowering the delicate sweetness of the vegetables.  I don’t know how she manages to do it but I am not going to question it.

Next up was Vegetable Stew with Mushrooms which is essentially the same as the previous stew with the addition of mushrooms which help give this stew a distinct taste of its own.  It is subtle, but the woodiness of the mushrooms really comes through in this flavor.  Again, the balance of flavors is simply perfect and if you are a mushroom lover, this one is for you.

They say save the best for last but in this case it is purely a matter of personal preference.  I love, love, love, the Spicy Vegetable Stew.  I love all things spicy but the addition of chili flakes to the stew gave a wonderfully spicy bite without being too spicy or taking away for the flavors of the vegetables.  That is what is nice about all of the stews – you can easily identify all the flavors you are experiencing.

Now I mentioned I enjoyed the stews cold (well room temperature) but I also used the mushroom variety as a dip with some organic tortilla chips and it made for an absolutely fabulous dip – just an idea I thought I would share.  I am also going to try adding a bit of chicken breast to a jar to make a quick chicken stew on a busy evening.  I am also going to use the stew as the sauce on my homemade gluten-free pizza.  That’s truly the great thing about Ellie’s products – they are so versatile.  Ellie says It’s a meal in a jar – and she is not kidding.

One final note.  One jar is about 150 calories – yes, you read that correctly 150 calories.  I had a jar for lunch on afternoon and it carried me through well past my normal dinner time.  Please check our Ellie’s Country Delights Web site for more information on her products and where to purchase them.  If you cannot find them in your area, just send Ellie and e-mail and I am sure she will do her best to help you.  She is super nice to boot.

Oh How I Wish I Lived on Main Street, Bakery on Main Product Reviews

Monday, August 9th, 2010

I have long been a fan of Bakery on Main’s great tasting gluten-free granola so was excited when my fabulous friends at Bakery on Main sent me a sampling of some of their products I have always loved along with some new products and flavors for me to try.

My favorite local supermarket’s gluten-free section carries only two flavors of Bakery on Main granola, the Apple Raisin Walnut and Nutty Cranberry Maple granola varieties and I have long been a fan.  I always knew that Bakery on Main had other flavors but never actively sought them out – though after tasting some of their new items, this is going to change.

Let’s start with their traditional granolas.  I sampled their Apple Raisin Walnut and Nutty Cranberry Maple both of which I have enjoyed for a long time.  First, the Nutty Cranberry Maple has a perfect balance of tangy (from the dried cranberries), sweet from the (honey, cane juice, and maple flavor), and nuttiness from the nuts and seeds that make up the body of this wonderfully crunchy granola.

Similarly the Apple Raisin Walnut is equally as delicious but quite different from the Nutty Cranberry in both taste and texture.  The Apple Raisin variety is again, perfectly balanced between the sweet fruit and rich nuttiness of the seeds and nuts.  All of the great ingredients are tied together with the wonderfully earthy maple flavor.  I have to confess, I was never a fan of walnuts – actually I don’t really care for them – but I LOVE this flavor, walnuts and all.  You don’t get the bitterness that is often associated with walnuts in this mix so it has definitely made a convert of me.

The Extreme Fruit and Nut granola was a new flavor to me and has quickly become my new favorite (though, can you really choose a favorite child).  I love the complexity of this one.  Not only do you get some of the delicious standard ingredients but this one adds coconut, apricot, raisins and a host of nuts (pecans, Brazil nuts, walnuts, and hazelnuts) that really help it live up to its extreme label.  I simply could not get enough of this one.  The fruit and nuts were the stars of this one and they were, again, perfectly balanced so that you could really enjoy both the sweet goodness of the fruit with the really rich and robust taste of the nuts and grains.

Oh, and if you think that you are buying the same granola with different flavors added, think again.  Bakery on Main keeps it interesting with subtle differences to the make-up of the granola base for each flavor that makes each one a truly unique experience.  Do not kid yourself that this granola is just for breakfast.  I love to sprinkle it over ice cream as it is the perfect topping.  I ave also been known to eat a bowl with milk for dessert

Now on to some delectable new (to me) Bakery on Main products…

First up is their Fiber Power Gluten Free Granola Triple Berry…whew, that’s a mouthful.  The fiber boosted variety was a real stand out in the products I sampled.  It had a really wonderful texture being extremely crunchy but the flavor is where this one shines.  There are subtle flavor notes that sneak up on you with this one.  You get the wonderfully earthiness of the oats and flax coupled with the sweet kick of raspberries, strawberries, and blueberries, rounded out with a wonderful sweetness that has a subtle kick of lemon on the back end of the flavors.  This is a complex variety that I urge you to give a try – not to mention it has 9 grams of dietary fiber and 3 grams of soluble fiber.

The final products I sampled were Bakery on Main’s Granola Bars.  No, that is not a typo.  Honest to goodness real soft granola bars.  I found myself tossing one of these into my bag each morning for a quick breakfast once at the office.  These wonderfully portable snacks are essentially the bar forms of some of Bakery on Main’s granola flavors.  I tried the Cranberry Maple Nut and Extreme Trail Mix bars and they are just as good as their bagged counterparts.  These will definitely be making it into my gluten-free travel packs that I take with me when traveling the globe.

So, if you are looking for great tasting granolas and portable treats, look know further than Bakery on Main.  You can view their full product portfolio on their Web site where you can also find a local store that carries their products or order right on the site and have their items shipped right to your door.  Oh, and while you are there, join there Eat Better, Live Better Club to get their newsletter and $1.50 off your next order.
