New LARABAR Chocolate Chip Cherry Torte Bar

Monday, October 17th, 2011

My ever-fabulous friends at LÄRABAR sent me a very unique surprise mailer with their new Chocolate Chip Cherry Torte bar a couple of weeks ago.  Not only did the mailer itself get my attention but the new flavor itself was definitely intriguing.  As I have been traveling quite a bit recently, I always look for throw and go-type products that I can literally toss in my bag and hit the road with.  LÄRABARS are something you’ll typically find in my briefcase because I have long been a fan of their bars.  I have said it before and I will say it again – I love all thing date.  The fact that LÄRABARS are date-based meant we were destined to be gluten-free friends.

So how does the new flavor stack up?  Do you really have to ask?  I mean it’s a LÄRABAR for goodness sake.  Think chocolate covered cherries with this one.  The tangy cherry flavor is perfectly paired with tons (and I mean tons) of sweet little chocolate chips.  Enter the almond and cashew pieces and you have quite possibly the most perfect LÄRABAR I have come across.  Yes, I still love all of their bars but this one is truly a standout and has quickly become my new favorite flavor.  That is until the flavor wizards at LÄRABAR come up with their next creation.

Do yourself a favor and give this one a go.  If you are a fan of chocolate and cherries like I am – you will not be disappointed.  Don’t forget to check out the LÄRABAR Web site for their full range of flavors and some cool promotions they have on at the moment.

Maple Grove Farms All Purpose Baking Mix

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

My friends on the farm, Maple Grove Farms that is, recently sent me a sample of their gluten-free All Purpose Baking Mix to try out.  Now those of you that follow me regularly know that weekends are where I shine in the breakfast department though I still look for products that will get me in and out of the kitchen quickly but deliver on taste.  Maple Grove definitely fit the bill perfectly as the pancake recipe was right on the box.

Maple Grove’s mix is a blend of potato and corn starches along with rice and corn flours and has a really fine consistency which make for easy mixing – read no lumps.  The batter mixes-up to the perfect consistency that holds together in the pan before the heat takes over and the pancakes begin to rise.  Some products I have tried go all runny and leave you with crepes vs. real fluffy pancakes.  Maple Grove’s cook-up wonderfully fully and brown and crisp absolutely perfectly.  Best of all, a little goes a long way.  I followed the instructions on the box for one batch of pancakes and since I prefer one large vs. several small, the recipe yielded two rather large pancakes, which was perfect.

Now for the taste.  These pancakes had a truly great flavor that played so well off the saltiness of the butter from the pan.  Add a bit of real maple syrup and you are in for a real treat.  These pancakes have a great light and airy texture and don’t leave you feeling like you ate a rock afterwards as is sometimes the case.

But don’t just use this for breakfast.  I do not bake so I am afraid this mix will only see pancakes and waffles.  This mix appears to be highly versatile and even the box has ideas for a range of uses.  Or better yet, try incorporating it in your favorite recipes as a flour substitute.  If you do give it a go, please let me know what you think.

Maple Grove Farms make a range of gluten-free products that you can view on their Web site – where you can also locate stores in your area or order online.

Looking for Something Sweet and Savory? Look No Further.

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

Those of you that follow me regularly know that I am an absolute fan of Food Fête Events that take place here in New York City.  Without fail I always tend to find fabulous new items at these events — food allergic specific or otherwise.  At their latest event, now a few months back, I was introduced to Angie’s Kettle Corn.

I am a self-professed snack food junkie but navigating the landscape can often be a challenge as so many products have flavorings that are a no-no for us Celiacs and quite frankly sometimes you just want a delicious snack that doesn’t require an advanced knowledge of all gluten-free ingredients when you are looking for a quick snack fix.

I sampled Angie’s Kettle Corn Classic variety which makes for a wonderfully sweet and savory snack with its hint of saltiness paired with a subtle hint of sugary sweetness.  Yet, the contradiction in flavors does not take away from the nutty popcorn taste.  So, next time you are looking for something a little sweet and salty, why not indulge with Angie’s.  They also make a Lite and Caramel version that will definitely be picking up next time I see them.

Be sure to check out their Web site for additional information and to view their entire product portfolio.

GF Treats from Down Under, Byron Bay Gourmet Foods

Monday, August 15th, 2011

My friends from down under sent me some of their products to sample and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with the offerings.  I am always on the hunt for great new gluten-free products that make for a great change from my normal routine.  I received Byron Bay Gourmet Foods Gluten-Free Sticky Date & Ginger Cookies and Rosemary & Sea Salt Crispbread – both of which were very unique.

First up was the Sticky Date Cookies cookies.  Now, I just happen to love all things dates.  I also have a particular penchant for cookies, so this was a win-win situation.  The first thing you’ll notice about these cookies is that they a mildly sweet so you don’t feel like you are eating a sugar bomb.  These tiny confections are highly complex in the flavor department though.  The subtle base has just a hint of saltiness from the butter followed by a delicate sweet earthiness from the dates and accompanying walnuts rounded out with just a hint of ginger spiciness.  These are the perfect accompaniment to a nice cup of tea or your morning coffee.  They also work amazingly as a crumbled topping for ice cream.

The  Rosemary & Sea Salt Crispbread are a real standout.  As many of you know, gluten-free crackers are often hit or miss.  These crispbread cracker rounds are wafer-thin and the absolutely perfect side for cheese or when topped with a hearty dip.  They have a subtle flavor of cheese and rosemary that does not overpower or take away from your topping of choice.

Best of all is that these treats are now available in North America.  Check out their Web site to find their distribution channels and to learn more about their complete product line.  Their dedicated cookie site can be found here.  You can even order these right from Amazon.com and have them shipped right to your door.

New Product Review, Five Star Meat Marinade

Saturday, August 6th, 2011

I recently received a couple of bottles of Five Star marinade to sample.  I am a huge meat eater and I am always on the lookout for fast, easy, and delicious ways to marinade my meat of choice and throw it in the oven.  Five Star marinade meets all of my criteria.  Simply pour the marinade over your meat of choice and toss in the refrigerator until you are ready to cook it.

The marinade has five simple ingredients: vinegar, salt, spices, paprika, and garlic.  You’ll also note what’s not there: MSG, sugar, carbs, preservatives, oils, or fats.  Sometimes simple works best.  I tried the marinade on a couple of chicken breasts and, while you can marinade overnight or days as the bottle notes, I only had a few hours.

What I love about the marinade is that it has a very unique flavor that is the perfect balance of spiciness with the tangy tartness of vinegar.  Now I am not sure what spices are used as it is obviously a guarded secret but I have not tasted a marinade that had some of the flavors going on that this one does.  Yet, at the same time, the marinade does not take away from the flavor of the meat itself but is rather the perfect compliment.

You can order Five Star right from the manufacturer’s Web site and learn more about the company itself.

Product Review, Wheat Don’t Need You Cookies

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

Not only do I love it when new, smaller gluten-free companies reach out to me, but when they are local makes it even better.  Wheat Don’t Need You, a cookies company out of Long Island, New York fits the bill perfectly and is making the gluten-free landscape all the sweeter with its Triple Threat cookies.

First, take all your pre-conceived notions of what a cookie should be and toss them aside.  These are decadent cookie bars the likes of which I have not come across since  before my diagnosis going on ten years now.  These are sweet little bars chock-full of chocolate, caramel, and pecans – I mean how can you go wrong?  At first bite you know you are in for something special as you notice the contradiction between soft and slight crispiness coupled with the perfect amount of sweetness rounded off with just a hint of saltiness.  These small bites pack a big flavor punch that even non-Celiacs will fall in love with.  The certified gluten-free oats mixed in with the traditional gluten-free flour mix adds a wonderful texture to the bars that is unlike anything I have come across recently.

The cookie’s creator is a diagnosed Celiac that, like many of us, missed a familiar favorite and decided to take matters, quite literally into her own hands – and boy, I am I glad she did.  If you are on Long Island you can pick up the cookies at several locations or, if you are not local, just order directly from their Web site and have them shipped directly to your front door.

I am so glad to have finally found a cookie bar that tastes like something I remembered from my pre-diagnosis days – not to mention it comes ready to eat.  Head on over to their Web site and check these out for yourself and you will not be disappointed.

Pacific Natural Foods New Hearty Soup Assortment

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

I recently had the opportunity to sample three new hearty potato soups from Pacific Natural Foods.  I have to admit I am not a huge soup fan but when I do indulge my tastes tend to skew towards the more chunky and creamy varieties.  I received their Chipotle Sweet Potato, Thai Sweet Potato, and Rosemary Potato soup varieties that were perfectly matched to my soup preferences.

I will be the first to admit that I am not fan a pre-made soups as I find them terribly overpowering in the salt department – so I was a bit skeptical initially when the products arrived – though my concerns would soon be alleviated at first taste.  The first thing I always do is look at the ingredient list on a product to identify any allergens or questionable ingredients.  What’s great about these soups (and with Pacific Natural Foods in general) is that you can actually identify every ingredient because they are real, everyday ingredients.  It’s nice not to have to compromise quality or taste for convenience – and these products could not be any easier to whip up – just heat and eat.

Now on to the reviews…

First up was the Chipotle Sweet Potato.  This was a blend of both regular and sweet potatoes which added another level of complexity from a taste and consistency standpoint.  You could really taste the earthiness of the white potatoes perfectly complimented by the rich sweetness of the sweet potatoes.  While the primary flavor was chipotle, it was not overpowering of overly spicy.  You had the slight kick of the chipotle that helped to round out the wonderful onion, garlic, cumin, and cilantro notes that melded perfectly in the cream base.

Next came the Thai Sweet Potato variety, which, again was a welcome surprise.  This is a straightforward sweet potato base with winter squash and  the added influence of Asian spices.  This was a more mild flavored soup in my opinion with subtle notes of chili, lemongrass, and ginger all perfectly balanced and perfectly complimented by the creamed coconut in the base.

Last up was the Rosemary Potato variety.  This was a wonderfully simple soup, well chowder actually,  that was packed with flavor.  Chunky potatoes with celery, onion, and carrots swimming in a rich cream sauce with the perfect compliment of rosemary – I mean, how can you go wrong?  I actually decided to add some roasted gluten-free organic chicken sausage to this one and it made for the perfect hearty comfort meal.

Pacific Natural Foods also makes finding products that suit specific food allergies or dietary restrictions easy by allowing visitors to their site the ability to sort their complete product line based on individual needs and preferences.  Head on over to their Web site and give it a try.  While you are there, check out their complete range of products from beverages to soups and everything in between.

Another Fete in the City.

Friday, April 29th, 2011

I once again had the pleasure of attending another Food Fête event here in New York City yesterday evening.  While the previous fête I attended focused on gluten-free and food allergy-related products this one was about healthy foods and snacks for kids.  I am always a bit leery when the focus is not on gluten-free, wondering what will I be able to try and share with my readers, but I am very happy to report that the majority of items were in fact fine for Celiacs.  No, I do not have any little ones of my own yet but sometimes you just want to feel like a kid again while keeping your pulse on what’s next on the food horizon.

One thing that is consistent across all of the fêtes is that Jeff Davis, the producer of Food Fête, really has a knack for bringing together an exciting group of products aligned with the larger event theme that never disappoint and there are always some great surprises that pop-up.

At this event there was a range of products from baby food to frozen yogurt (more on that later) and pretty much everything in between.  I will delve more deeply into some of the products in the coming weeks here on my blog but here’s a brief overview of some of the products that caught my attention.  First up was some figs, chocolate-dipped and in other kid friendly serving options (one of my personal favorite fruits) from the California Fig Advisory Board who gave me a quick crash course in figs which was fascinating.  Moving on I made my way toward the Dole table and was happy to learn that they now float their fruit cups (Real Fruit Bites)  in 100% natural fruit juice…nice.

Dr. Praeger’s Sensible Foods was on hand and I was happy because I always had trouble identifying what products in their line were gluten-free.  This is no longer a problem because I found out I just need to look for the gluten-free designation that is easy to find on the front of their boxes.  They were sampling their Spinach Littles product which were sort of a potato/spinach pancake cut into fun kid-friendly shapes and were really very good and I would guess a great way to get kids excited about eating their veggies.  Another favorite of mine Applegate was also on hand with a sampling of their products, including one of my all-time personal favorites – their gluten-free chicken nuggets.

Next up was a brand that  is actually one of my clients, GoGo Squeez.  Yes, in full disclosure they are a client but in all honesty you will always find a package (or two) in my bag when I am on the go.  I became obsessed with these sweet (and healthy) little pouches even before we began working with them.  Their portable applesauce and applesauce fruit blends are re-sealable and perfect for those with an on-the-go lifestyle (read adults and kids alike).  Just toss and go.

Another one of my favorite sort of cultish obsessions was also in attendance – enter the Grāpple (“Grape – L”).  Think apples that taste like Concord grapes.  This seasonal favorite is always a welcome site in my market though they can be tough to track down sometimes.  I was informed by the brand that they’ll be around a little longer this year – into June – due to an extended growing season.  Great news indeed.  Jarlsberg cheese was also on-hand and was serving-up their cheeses in surprisingly gluten-friendly presentation styles – on cucumber slices and a new gluten-free cracker I had not yet tried (but will definitely be following up on).

A new (to me) company Sustenex was sampling their probiotic chewy vitamin gummy and chews for kids (though a serving of four is an adult-dose).  The gummies are in fact gluten-free but the chews are not.  I am looking forward to giving these a try as I am pretty much a fan of all things in gummy form.

My last stop was with an old favorite that sort of fell of the radar, TCBY.  Yes, that TCBY who is back on the scene with its Super Fro-Yo offerings that are low in calories and high in fiber.  I tried their White Chocolate Mousse variety and it was love at first bite.  You’ll definitely be hearing more about this from me in the near future.  As a note, their soft serve line is gluten-free but their hand scooped varieties are a no-go as they do have cookie mix-in varieties and therefore cross-contamination is an issue.  Their representative was very knowledgeable on gluten-free needs and fingers crossed that their parent (Mrs. Fields) will soon have some gluten-free options.

All in all it was another great evening and I love it when more and more mainstream products are either adding gluten-free extensions or have formulations that are naturally free from gluten.

A Fete of Allergy Friendly Foods in N.Y.C.

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

Last night I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to attend a Food Fête event showcasing food allergy-related products here in New York City.  I actually did not know much about Food Fête when its owner Jeff reached out to me a while back but after learning more about them I was excited to attend one of their events.

Yesterday’s event did not disappoint.  What’s nice about Food Fête is that it is more like an intimate cocktail party than trade show.  I was greeted at the registration desk by two of the nicest guys who made me feel immediately welcome.  After a quick check-in, I was on my way navigating the vendors on display.

The first vendor I actually ran into was Allergic Girl herself.  I always find it funny that many of us “know” each other but never met in-person.  Sloane had a table with copies of her latest book, which by the way I started reading on my way home and is fabulous!  Of course I could not refuse the offer of an allergy-sensitive lollipop for the road.

Moving on, there was a nice balance of more well-established brands and new (to me) companies that were doing some great things in the food allergy sphere.  Some of the new standouts were Lucini Italia with a delicious Italian version of socca; Redwood Hill Farm had some great goat’s milk and shared space with Green Valley Organics which had some great lactose free dairy products; Pasta Prima which had over the top fresh gluten-free ravioli (in two flavors); and Home Free cookies which addressed several different types of allergies across their product line.

Of course there were some old favorites there as well.  My fabulous friends from Rudi’s Gluten Free were there sampling their new hamburger buns.  Hot dog rolls and a pizza crust are also in the wings for release in a few months.  I know I am looking forward to them.  Enjoy Life was sampling their new hard cookies (which were delicious) along with some of their other favorites of mine.  Mary’s Gone Crackers is always a welcome site and I finally tried their sticks which were great.  Pacific Natural Foods was sampling hemp milk (among their other products) of which I tried the chocolate variety and was actually surprised at how good it was.

Cocktails for the evening were provided by Cockspur Rum which is an absolute favorite of my Bermudian other-half but I had yet to try it until last night.  You see I am not a fan of rum but the cocktail I had yesterday definitely made me a convert.  It was a spicy mix of ginger and rum that was just what the doctor ordered.

My sincere thanks to Jeff and Food Fête for a great evening.

A Little Bit of This, A Little Bit of That

Friday, February 11th, 2011

This past week has been absolutely crazy busy between my day job and personal life and busy is always good. Alas, I was not able to get to the product reviews I had hoped to – but fear not ye gluten-free followers, they will most definitely make their way onto the site over the coming days.

In the meantime, I thought I would whet your appetites a bit with what product reviews are in fact coming down the pipeline – so here’s a sneak peek at just a few of the items coming soon.

Have a great weekend.

New Product Reviews Coming Soon:

Konriko Rice Mixes: Hot N Spicy Brown Rice Pilaf and Wild Pecan Brown Rice
