Passover Product Roundup

Wednesday, March 20th, 2013

One of my favorite times of the year is Passover – when new gluten-free products tend to flood onto store shelves.  Three local supermarkets in my area had truly amazing Passover sections this year and all were larger than previous years – heck, one market has two full aisles and stand-alone displays set up well in advance of Passover.   This year in particular I tried some really delicious new Passover items so I thought I’d do a Passover Roundup of some of the standouts (and old favorites) that I indulged in this year.

First up is my all-time favorite – matzo (well, as close to matzo as a Celiac can get).  Now, over the years I have tried everything from super-expensive hand made matzo (that, at $10 per board, yes per board, was a disappointment) to mass produced matzo.  When it comes to gluten-free matzo there are really two players, Yehuda and Manischewitz.  I have long been a fan of Yehuda’s plain and onion varieties.  They are large sheets that are extremely crisp and flakey – the do tend to leave a crumb mess behind but it’s a small price to pay.  This year, for the first time (as they are new), I came across Manischwitz matzo and have to say that they even more closely resemble the real thing.  They are a just a bit softer in texture so they are more akin to what I remember good old gluten-filled matzo tasting like.  They also make smaller matzo-style crackers that are exactly the same consistency as the larger boards only perfect for dipping and snacking.  One important note is that both of these brands are not suitable replacements for Passover Seder because of their ingredients.

Another great savory snack find is Paskesz Crispits Flats – I prefer the Everything variety.  These are really great for entertaining because each cracker is quite long not to mention they have a pretty robust texture (making them great for dipping or topping) and are packed with flavor.  These truly reminded me of the flatbread crackers I enjoyed in my pre-diagnosis days.

Now onto my favorite part – the sweets.

I am always amazed at the amount of gluten-free cakes and cookies that pop-up every Passover.  Year over year there is just an exponential growth in the sweets category.  This year I came across some new brands that produce some truly amazing sweets.  Lilly’s Bake Shoppe makes a chocolate roll cake that is wonderfully fluffy cake with layers of rich (but not too sweet) chocolate icing with the entire thing enrobed in chocolate – truly decadent.  I have long been a huge fan of all things rainbow cookie and have had my share of gluten-free versions.  Yet, this Passover, I came across Zemer Cookies and Cakes who make a truly delicious rainbow cookie.  The individual layers are moist and have just the right amount of fruit preserves between each layer.  Each cookie also has just a touch of chocolate frosting on both the top and bottom so you can really enjoy the cookie itself without having it be overpowered by the icing.

Of course one of my go-to brands throughout the year for baked sweets, Shabtai Gourmet, also has an impressive line-up of every possible baked good you can imagine but I am a huge fan of their Ring Tings and Yidels.  They also make a fantastic seven layer cake and rainbow cookies that are personal favorites as well.

Another perennial favorite is Oberlander’s Bakery who make the one of the most amazing assorted cookie selections I have come across (not to mention they make a mean seven layer cake).  Their chocolate leaves and sandwich cookies are two of my personal favorites and if you love black and white cookies like I do, don’t miss Oberlander’s gluten-free variety.

So do be sure to check out some of these brands if you come across them at your local market.  Best of all, in a week or so, the bulk of the remaining items will be on sale.  I have also selected several items from this post and included them in my One for Me, One for You Giveaway (and a few more might just get added before it’s all over).  Be sure to enter today if you have not already.

Bella Lucia Gluten Free Pizzelles

Thursday, January 3rd, 2013

I always love it when I have those gluten-free ah-ha moments when I come across a gluten-free version of an item I had enjoyed prior to my Celiac diagnosis.  A recent visit to a D.C. area Wegmans yielded these sweet little treats from Bella Lucia.

Growing up, I remember my mother with her pizzelle maker making homemade pizzelles most often around the holidays.  As a child, it was always exciting to help her make these because they were so different and typically signaled that the holidays were coming.

So imagine my complete surprise when perusing the gluten-free aisle to come across a selection of gluten-free pizzelles.  I actually have to credit my other half for finding them because I actually missed them at first pass.  These come in anise, cinnamon, and vanilla varieties.  I opted to try the cinnamon and vanilla and they did not disappoint.

These cookies were light and crisp which is what you would expect in the perfect pizzelle.  The vanilla variety had subtle notes of vanilla that were perfectly balanced by a refined sweetness that did not overpower.  The cinnamon variety was elevated by the slight spiciness of the cinnamon that was complimented by the slightly sweet base. Not only did I love these, but my mother also gave her seal of approval having enjoyed these with me over this past Christmas.

If you come across these I would definitely recommend pick-up a few packages because they will go fast.  You can learn more about the company and their gluten-free products on their Web site where you can also locate where their products are carried or buy them online and have them shipped to your door.  You can also friend them on Facebook.

Les Recettes de Celiane Batonnets Chocolat au Lait

Friday, November 23rd, 2012

Another Geneva, Switzerland find that I brought back with me were these delectable milk chocolate fingers or Bâtonnets Chocolat au Lait (sounds more appealing in French).  Now first off, Céliane is an actual person who was born with a gluten intolerance who, according to the product back story, wanted to create a range of delicious products to share with the public.

This was my first time trying this brand but this product did standout.  The chocolate fingers were extremely reminiscent of an old beloved British variety that I had the pleasure to enjoy before my Celiac diagnosis.  Well, I no longer need to rely on delicious memories because Céliane has created  gluten-free chocolate finger that rivals the best of them.  The biscuit itself is exactly what you would expect – wonderfully crunchy with a subtle sweetness with just a slight tinge of saltiness.  Pair this with the creamy milk chocolate that enrobes each finger, and well, you have chocolate finger perfection.

Les Recettes de Céliane has a good range of products that I look forward to sampling next time I come across them.  You can learn more about the company and their products on their Web site which is available in English and French.

New Products Reviewed: Schaer Meranetti and Cioccolini

Wednesday, November 21st, 2012

I picked these sweet treats up in Geneva, Switzerland at the Urban Bio Market – a great health food store that has an impressive selection of gluten-free items as well.  I immediately noticed the familiar Schär yellow packaging on the shelf so thought I would try some of their products that are not available in the United States.

First up was the Meranetti which are chocolate cupcakes filled with gianduja chocolate cream.  These are individually wrapped (four to a box) which makes for a perfect portion controlled snack – not to mention it keeps each cupcake moist.  What’s nice about these cupcakes is that they are not overly sweet but have a rich cocoa flavor that really comes through.  The filling is also not too sweet with the cocoa flavor perfectly complemented with a subtle hint of hazelnut.

The Cioccolini are small chocolate cookies with a chocolate cream filling hidden inside.  Again, these were not overly sweet with a subtle sweetness that allowed the chocolate notes to really shine.  While these were good, I was expecting the cream centers to be soft and they were in fact hard.  I am not sure if this was the normal filling consistency or if these were just a bit off.  They were perfectly sealed and one year within the consume by date so not sure what was up with them.  They were still good but would have preferred a softer center.

I love traveling around the world and seeing what some familiar companies are doing in local regions.  Hopefully more and more of the international brands with a U.S. presence with continue to expand their product offerings by bringing over some of their popular regional products.

Now if I can just figure out why Schär in the United States is pronounced incorrectly sans umlaut, even by the brand…drives this German-educated Celiac nuts :-) .

Galbusera Zero Grano Plus con Gocce di Puro Cioccolato

Tuesday, September 11th, 2012

Another Italian gluten-free find from my excursion to Arthur Avenue here in New York City was these Galbusera Zero Grano Plus con Gocce di Puro Cioccolato cookies.  These come in six portion controlled individual bags which makes indulging a little less guilt-ridden.

The first thing you will notice about these cookies is that they have a very subtle sweetness that allows the rich deep chocolate notes to really come through.  Throw in delectable tiny chocolate morsels and any chocolate lover will be one happy camper.  But wait, that’s not all.  You see if these were just chocolate on their own they would still be a homerun.  However, you will also notice a very subtle hint of hazelnut and honey that play absolutely perfectly off of the chocolate.

I have been seeing the Galbusera brand popping up in more and more specialty markets so be sure to look for them next time your are at your local market.  Additionally, there are several online retailers that import them here in the Unites States and will ship them right to your door.  Check out Shop Italy Online which has a range of Galbusera products available for shipping.

Galbusera Frollini al Cacao con Crema Vaniglia Cookies

Monday, September 10th, 2012

A recent visit to the Little Italy of the Bronx known as Arthur Avenue yielded a host of delicious gluten-free products from Italy.  I was familiar with the Galbusera brand thanks to an Italian friend who introduced me to the brand years ago.  Ever since then I am always excited when I come across the brand here in the United States.

These cookies are chocolate sandwich cookies filled with a sweet vanilla cream.  The cookies themselves are mildly sweet with a rich cocoa undertone.  There delicate subtle sweetness allows for the rich vanilla cream to be the real standout.  The vanilla cream perfectly complements the cocoa flavor of the cookies.  If you are thinking Oreos, think again.  These are far smaller and more sophisticated cookies but they are still filling so three or four and you are good to go without having to feel guilty about indulging your sweet tooth.

As for where to purchase these in the United States, definitely check out your local Italian market if you have one.  If not, simply pop online where several stores such as Shop Italy Online carry a range of products (gluten-free and otherwise) imported directly from Italy and shipped to your front door.

GF Treats from Down Under, Byron Bay Gourmet Foods

Monday, August 15th, 2011

My friends from down under sent me some of their products to sample and I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with the offerings.  I am always on the hunt for great new gluten-free products that make for a great change from my normal routine.  I received Byron Bay Gourmet Foods Gluten-Free Sticky Date & Ginger Cookies and Rosemary & Sea Salt Crispbread – both of which were very unique.

First up was the Sticky Date Cookies cookies.  Now, I just happen to love all things dates.  I also have a particular penchant for cookies, so this was a win-win situation.  The first thing you’ll notice about these cookies is that they a mildly sweet so you don’t feel like you are eating a sugar bomb.  These tiny confections are highly complex in the flavor department though.  The subtle base has just a hint of saltiness from the butter followed by a delicate sweet earthiness from the dates and accompanying walnuts rounded out with just a hint of ginger spiciness.  These are the perfect accompaniment to a nice cup of tea or your morning coffee.  They also work amazingly as a crumbled topping for ice cream.

The  Rosemary & Sea Salt Crispbread are a real standout.  As many of you know, gluten-free crackers are often hit or miss.  These crispbread cracker rounds are wafer-thin and the absolutely perfect side for cheese or when topped with a hearty dip.  They have a subtle flavor of cheese and rosemary that does not overpower or take away from your topping of choice.

Best of all is that these treats are now available in North America.  Check out their Web site to find their distribution channels and to learn more about their complete product line.  Their dedicated cookie site can be found here.  You can even order these right from Amazon.com and have them shipped right to your door.

Katz Gluten Free New Products and Giveaway

Friday, July 15th, 2011

When my friends at Katz Gluten-Free asked if I wanted to sample their three new products: Coffee Bundt Cake, Snack Popper cookies, and Apple Pie – it took me about a second to say yes.  I have long been a fan of Katz’s products since I first tried them a couple of years ago.

Well, they have grown steadily since that time and are now celebrating reaching 40 products in their delicious gluten-free line-up.  To celebrate this milestone they are graciously giving one of my lucky readers TEN of their gluten-free products (of the winner’s choosing).  As if that was not enough, they are having a super summer giveaway on their site that will give one lucky winner all 40 of their products.

Now on to the reviews…

The Coffee Bundt Cake arrives complete with its very own container of rich coffee flavored icing.  The cake itself is a very good-sized and could easily serve a hungry family and then some.  The cake itself is not too sweet with the icing adding additional sweetness and the subtle flavor of dark coffee.    All you need to do is place the icing container in hot water to help it melt and then drizzle over the cake.  It could not be easier.

The apple pie is a bit small at six inches though yields about four to five slices.  The pie has a terrific flakey crust and is full of sweet apples with a hint of cinnamon — though it could benefit from just a bit more filling.  Again, it is not overly sweet so you can pair it with some ice cream for a decadent and easy dessert.

The last product up was the new Snack Poppers.  Now these are gluten-free versions of egg kichel and are really something special.  Kichel are traditionally mildly sweet with the bulk of sweetness coming from their sugar dusting.  These are ideal with your morning coffee though I do tend to pop a few throughout the day.

If you have not tried Katz Gluten-Free than do yourself a favor as they really have something for every taste and have a knack for re-creating gluten-free versions of gluten-filled favorites that are completely indistinguishable when it comes to taste.

So, if you want to be the lucky winner of ten of their products of your choosing – just shoot me an e-mail with Katz Giveaway in the subject line and you will be entered.  U.S. residents only.  The contest will run through midnight Eastern Time on July 30th.  Don’t forget to head on over to the Katz Web site (and don’t forget to tell them I sent you :-) ) for your chance to win ALL of their products delivered to your door.

New Product Review, Ethel’s Edibles

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

I am always on the lookout for new gluten-free products that I can share with my readers.  I received samples from Ethel’s Edibles not that long ago and was so glad that I did.  I had not heard of Ethel’s before so for those of you out there in the same boat, Ethel’s makes Pecan Dandys and Hot Blondies.

Now it is no secret that I have a pronounced sweet tooth and love my sweet treats.  I can honestly say that I have not had a blondie since my diagnosis going on 10 years.  Ethel’s blondies are exactly like the blondies I remembered from my pre-Celiac days.  They were perfectly sweet without being too sugary – a wonderful blondie base with chocolate chips spread throughout.  You also notice the slight buttery saltiness that, to me makes for the perfect blondie.

The Pecan Dandys were in a word – AMAZING.  I have long been a fan of pecan pie, in fact, it is quite possibly my favorite dessert.  I have also not had it since my diagnosis and let me tell you that Ethel’s Pecan Dandys are pecan pie in bar form.  They are caramel dreams chock-full of tender pecans.  Again, they are not overly sweet and the sweetness plays perfectly off the woody bite of the pecans.  If you love pecan pie and miss it, then look no further my friends, because these are the best gluten-free version I have come across.

Be sure to check out Ethel’s Web site for additional information and to order online.  You can also find them on Facebook and Twitter.

Product Review, Wheat Don’t Need You Cookies

Sunday, May 29th, 2011

Not only do I love it when new, smaller gluten-free companies reach out to me, but when they are local makes it even better.  Wheat Don’t Need You, a cookies company out of Long Island, New York fits the bill perfectly and is making the gluten-free landscape all the sweeter with its Triple Threat cookies.

First, take all your pre-conceived notions of what a cookie should be and toss them aside.  These are decadent cookie bars the likes of which I have not come across since  before my diagnosis going on ten years now.  These are sweet little bars chock-full of chocolate, caramel, and pecans – I mean how can you go wrong?  At first bite you know you are in for something special as you notice the contradiction between soft and slight crispiness coupled with the perfect amount of sweetness rounded off with just a hint of saltiness.  These small bites pack a big flavor punch that even non-Celiacs will fall in love with.  The certified gluten-free oats mixed in with the traditional gluten-free flour mix adds a wonderful texture to the bars that is unlike anything I have come across recently.

The cookie’s creator is a diagnosed Celiac that, like many of us, missed a familiar favorite and decided to take matters, quite literally into her own hands – and boy, I am I glad she did.  If you are on Long Island you can pick up the cookies at several locations or, if you are not local, just order directly from their Web site and have them shipped directly to your front door.

I am so glad to have finally found a cookie bar that tastes like something I remembered from my pre-diagnosis days – not to mention it comes ready to eat.  Head on over to their Web site and check these out for yourself and you will not be disappointed.
