Pamela’s Whenever Bars

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

My friends at Pamela’s Gluten-Free recently sent me the brand spanking new Whenever Bars to sample.  Now, those of you that follow me regularly now I am all about great tasting portable snacks that I can quite literally toss and go with.  Well my gluten-free friends, you are going to absolutely love these new bars.  I have been eating at least one bar a day since they arrived – for breakfast or even a mid-day snack that tastes great and is so much better than a candy bar.

First off, these bars contain gluten-free oats.  I know that there is an ongoing discussion in the Celiac community as to whether Celiacs can eat oats and know some Celiacs prefer not to eat them – and that is totally their call.  I, on the other hand, have no problems with gluten-free oats so these bars were a fabulous and most welcome surprise.

So on to the bars…

Whenever Bars come in four great varieties: Oat Raisin Walnut Spice; Oat Blueberry Lemon; Oat Cranberry Almond; and Oat Chocolate Chip Coconut.  All of the bars are high in Omega 3 Fatty Acids, Whole Grains, and all are free from Trans-Fats.  They are all also wheat- and gluten-free and non-dairy (though the chocolate chip variety does state that the chocolate chunks may contain traces of milk proteins due to manufacturing equipment).

The Oat Raisin Walnut Spice variety is like a giant oatmeal cookie.  Perfectly soft, moist, and chock-full of sweet raisins.  They also have walnuts and chia seeds that add a wonderfully nutty dimension to these bars rounded off by a perfect mix of spices make these the perfect snack for autumn and winter.

Next up are the Oat Blueberry Lemon bars.  These are a real standout.  Their subtle sweetness is perfectly balanced by the tartness of the blueberries and kick of lemon oil.  Add a slight hint of nutmeg and these bars pack a powerful flavor combination.

Onto the Oat Cranberry Almond bars which, like their previous counterparts, are soft and moist.  They are filled with tart cranberries that provide the perfect kick to the sweet oat base.  The final dimension of flavor in this variety is the almonds which add great flavor and texture to these bars.

Last, but certainly not least are the Oat Chocolate Chip Coconut variety.  These are sweet without being overly sweet and the chocolate chunks make these a real treat.  The meaty coconut adds a not only great texture but unique flavor to these bars.

So overall these bars are a homerun.  They are completely portable (you’ll now find them in my briefacase), delicious, and unlike any other gluten-free bar out there.  Not to mention with four unique flavor varieties, there is truly something for everyone.

Pamela’s has a great portfolio of gluten-free products so be sure to head on over to their Web site and check out their complete line of offerings.

New LARABAR Chocolate Chip Cherry Torte Bar

Monday, October 17th, 2011

My ever-fabulous friends at LÄRABAR sent me a very unique surprise mailer with their new Chocolate Chip Cherry Torte bar a couple of weeks ago.  Not only did the mailer itself get my attention but the new flavor itself was definitely intriguing.  As I have been traveling quite a bit recently, I always look for throw and go-type products that I can literally toss in my bag and hit the road with.  LÄRABARS are something you’ll typically find in my briefcase because I have long been a fan of their bars.  I have said it before and I will say it again – I love all thing date.  The fact that LÄRABARS are date-based meant we were destined to be gluten-free friends.

So how does the new flavor stack up?  Do you really have to ask?  I mean it’s a LÄRABAR for goodness sake.  Think chocolate covered cherries with this one.  The tangy cherry flavor is perfectly paired with tons (and I mean tons) of sweet little chocolate chips.  Enter the almond and cashew pieces and you have quite possibly the most perfect LÄRABAR I have come across.  Yes, I still love all of their bars but this one is truly a standout and has quickly become my new favorite flavor.  That is until the flavor wizards at LÄRABAR come up with their next creation.

Do yourself a favor and give this one a go.  If you are a fan of chocolate and cherries like I am – you will not be disappointed.  Don’t forget to check out the LÄRABAR Web site for their full range of flavors and some cool promotions they have on at the moment.

NuGo Free Bars

Sunday, October 16th, 2011

Once again, I picked up this bar during my travels and was pleasantly surprised. Perhaps one of the portable snacks that I miss most since my diagnosis is the chewy granola bar. NuGo Free’s Dark Chocolate Trail Mix Bar is both gluten-free and vegan. Think chewy dark chocolate coated granola bar on this one.

It was an interesting mix of rice protein crisps, brown rice, cranberries, pumpkin seeds, flax seeds and walnuts. As if that was not enough throw in a coating of rich dark chocolate and you have granola bar kismet. The bar is just sweet enough to satiate your sweet tooth without being too sugary and the seeds and nuts are the perfect contrast to the chocolate coating.

Another rest area find was the gluten-free Carrot Cake Bar from NuGo Free. All I needed to see was the words carrot and cake and this Celiac was sold. Now, I have to say that I was a bit apprehensive at what I was getting myself into with this one and didn’t hold out much hope for it even remotely reminding me or carrot cake. Well, I was most pleasantly surprised with this one and while not a actual piece of carrot cake, it was a very good portable replacement and was also vegan, soy- and dairy-free.

The bar had a spicy cinnamon flavor that paired perfectly with the earthy carrot flavor and slight sweetness that made for the perfect trifecta flavor combination. Is this going to replace your hunger for a real piece of carrot cake — probably not but it is a great portable option to toss in your travel bag when you are looking for a gluten-free bar that is a different option and standout in the sea of gluten-free bars out there.

Where in the World is the World’s Best Burger?

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Well, my friends I’ve been to Nice and the Isle of Greece while I…well, you know the rest.  Forgive my Charlene moment there.  Is it New York?  Los Angeles?  London?  Dubai?  Hong Kong?  Nope.  It’s actually…in Montreux, Switzerland – a small town roughly 2 hours outside of Geneva on the shores of Lac Léman.  That’s right, nestled in Fairmont’s Le Montreux Palace Hotel, well, actually you can only access by walking out of the hotel briefly along the Grand Rue to Harry’s New York Bar.  Sometimes you just find great things in the most unlikely of places.  I love a good burger and have certainly eaten my fair share while traveling the globe.  Yet, at the same time, it is not something I actively seek out while on the road.  So how did I stumble across this one?  Well, Harry’s has always been one of my all-time favorite bars.  It has a great atmosphere and the service is second to none.  Their bartenders mix a mean cocktail and the manager cannot do enough for his patrons.

When in Montreux, my other half and I make a point of hitting Harry’s at least once (sometimes more) an evening.  It is a great spot for a relaxed drink before heading out to dinner and even better to have a nice nightcap before retiring for the evening.  If you go outside of the Jazz Festival period it is never really crowded and even when it is it works.  Over the years we have some to know some of the regulars who frequent the place and the service staff has been pretty consistent over time.  So what does all this have to do with a burger?

One late evening after hitting the Casino I decided to have a quick drink to round off the evening.  Now, my frequent readers know I am a bit of a lush so no surprise there.  My other half and I popped into Harry’s and settled into one of their comfortable booths.  We ordered our drinks but I was feeling a bit peckish (again, no newsflash there) and decided to peruse the bar menu.  The menu is really very comprehensive and has everything from Rib Eye to Spaghetti to the famous burger.  I was craving a burger so when the manager came over to attend to us, I explained my allergies and if I could have the burger sans bun and fries (possible shellfish cross contamination).  Without skipping a beat the manager could not offer me enough options to pair with my burger.  I mean, I typically just get the patty with lettuce and tomato but he felt it his duty to make sure that I felt like I was not getting the full experience.  I don’t think there was anything he would not hair offered to pair with my burger.  I settled on a fresh salad of mesclun greens lightly tossed with the house vinaigrette.

When the burger arrived, the presentation was impeccable.  A hearty patty grilled to perfection with every possible accoutrement one could hope for – condiments, pickles, sliced tomato, onion, well you get the idea.  I have always enjoyed topping my burgers with a ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard which I keep in separate areas of the plate, almost like a painter’s palate, and paint each bit with just the perfect amount of each.  OCD?  Perhaps, but it truly makes for the most perfect of bites.

The burger itself has a consistency unlike any other you will come across.  I tend to order all of my meat charred (though this is slowly changing) but not here – medium is the perfect temperature to enjoy these burgers.  Perhaps it’s the Swiss beef (I love that the Swiss put the country of origin for meat on every menu) or perhaps it is the atmosphere or maybe a combination of both that makes this the best burger.  When you cut into it you barely need any effort and the first bite is something you will not soon forget.  It is almost creamy in texture and seasoned to perfection.  It is more akin to eating a fine pate than a greasy burger.  I have no clue what they mix into the meat but whatever it is makes for absolute burger perfection.  The spices are subtle but so well balanced that one could easily eat the burger by itself and not even notice the lack of condiments.  To me it is true burger perfection as it can stand on it’s own without bread, without cheese, without any of the traditional accompaniments – how many burgers can really do that?

So, if you find yourself walking along the Grand-Rue of Montreux, do yourself a favor and pop-in for a cocktail and perhaps a nibble.  My partner and I have enjoyed many a meal at Harry’s (outside of the famed burger) because we went for a drink and ended up tucking-in for the evening because it is just that cozy.
