Located just off the New York State Thruway at the base of the Catskill Mountains in Saugerties, New York is an unassuming diner and pizzeria that you would never think could possibly be a gluten-free haven for locals and travelers alike.
I spend a fair amount of time in the Catskills and there are great dining options off the beaten path – particularly a steady increase of places that cater to gluten-free guests. Over the years, we have visited the Starway Diner and years ago it was just your standard diner that was not anything noteworthy. Yet over the past few years they have upped their game and the food quality and offerings have undergone a mountain renaissance of sorts. In particular, they added an extensive list of gluten-free options to their menu and there is truly something to satisfy whatever you might be in the mood for. From gluten-free breakfast options including pancakes and French toast to sandwiches and wraps to hearty pastas and pizza.
I usually pop-in for lunch sometimes and my go-to item is the Irish Wrap which is a hearty portion of hot corned beef, Swiss cheese and sauerkraut tossed with thousand island dressing wrapped-in a warm gluten-free tortilla and grilled. It is a gluten-free take on the classic Reuben that is less dense than its sandwich counterpart. But fear not, if you want to get your carb-fix there are a host of sandwich option that come on gluten-free bread – not to mention that the burgers come complete with gluten-free buns. Even the diner classics like chicken fingers and mozzarella sticks are available in gluten-free form as is pretty much everything on the menu. The best part is that the upcharge is typically a mere $1-$2.
You can view the full menu on their website and if you are in the area looking for a quick gluten-free bite that is full of diner comfort food classics, be sure to pop-in.
