I think that I am gaining a reputation for having a particular sweet tooth as I get numerous e-mail from companies wanting me to sample their sweet treats. If I took them all-up on their offers I would probably be twice my current size. I therefore remain pretty selective and look for products that standout from the sea of sameness that has become the gluten-free sweets aisle.
So, when someone from Maxine’s Heavenly reached out to me I was intrigued. For starters, it was a brand I had never heard of. That coupled with the fact that these are vegan, non-GMO, soy-free and sweetened only with coconut sugar was the hook that made me really want to give them a try. I mean I am most definitely not what I would describe as a health nut by any stretch of the imagination but I love a good sweet and because these were gluten-free oat-based (which happens to be my favorite cookie base) I thought why not?
This was either going to be an utter disappointment skewing towards the healthy but tasteless end of the spectrum or they were going to rock my gluten-free world. I am happy to say that it was the latter and the four bags I received barely lasted a week (though I did share with my other half – who is not celiac but raved about these cookies).
I sampled the Cinnamon Oatmeal Raisin, Chocolate Chocolate Chip, Almond Chocolate Chip and Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip. I mean three out of the four had the magic word in them – chocolate. The Cinnamon Oatmeal Raisin were absolutely delicious. They were reminiscent of those I used to enjoy in my pre-celiac diagnosis days. Subtly sweet peppered with plump raisins and a hint of spiciness from a kick of cinnamon. The Chocolate Chocolate Chip was chocolate overload in a very good way. A rich chocolate base that was chock-full of chocolate chips yet not overly sweet – the perfect balance of chocolate on chocolate. The Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip was another stand-out. A wonderfully mild peanut butter base had that slightly salty kick that makes for the perfect peanut butter flavor – roasted peanuts added a lovely texture to each bite. Last-up were the Almond Chocolate Chip which had a really unique flavor profile. The addition of almonds gave these a rich woodsy undertone that paired perfectly with the oat cookie base.
