This second installment of my Everyday Luxuries series features Feel Good Foods Vegetable Spring Rolls, Chicken Spring Rolls and Beef Empanadas.
Time is definitely a luxury for me so any help I can get in the kitchen is always most appreciated. I am not a huge fan of frozen items but when it comes to gluten-free items that are items that are harder to find (let alone make) I am always game.
Feel Good Foods recently started selling their products via Fresh Direct which I use quite often for grocery deliveries here in New York City. They have a large selection of gluten-free items and recently Feel Good Foods popped-up unexpectedly so I have to give them a try.
The Chicken Spring Rolls are quite large and super easy to heat in the oven. I placed them on parchment to prevent sticking and it worked like a dream. The thin pastry crisps-up and browns absolutely perfectly thanks to a very thin crust enrobing the roll, providing the perfect crunch when you first bite-in. The rolls are filled with a mix of tender chicken and crisp cabbage, carrots and scallions that is perfectly seasoned with ginger, chili pepper and cilantro. These were not overly salty which was nice and it was great to be able to bake them in the oven vs. frying and still end up with a super crispy roll — just be sure to following the instructions turning semi-frequently when heating.
The Vegetable Spring Rolls were equally as delicious just sans chicken but contained vermicelli noodles and the addition of shiitake mushrooms to add a bit of bulk and additional level of flavor to the rolls.
The beef empanadas were something that definitely piqued my interest. I have not had a gluten-free empanada since I was in Buenos Aires and found both a restaurant and store that carried them — and I’ve been searching in the States ever-since. These empanadas were quite good. They heat-up quickly and the end result is perfectly crisp and brown.
The pastry was thick but not overly heavy and had a nice texture. The filling was a hearty mix of ground beef, potatoes, tomatoes, peas and queso blanco cheese. It was flavorful but not overpowering with the ingredients playing well against each other.
I am definitely looking forward to trying the rest of the products from Feel Good Foods since they have a gluten-free range that includes: Spring Rolls, Potstickers, Taquitos, and Asian Meals (Pad See Ew Noodles, General Tso’s Chicken, Mongolian Beef and Vegetable Fried Rice).
