Waiter, There Is A Staple In My Filet

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

So, my partner and I were entertaining a rather famous friend at the new Brasserie du Palace at Le Fairmont Montreux Palace where we were staying – our first time since it rebranded as a Fairmont from previously having been a Raffles (still part of the Fairmont chain).

Well, this trip proved that there is something about a name.  We are talking about a five star deluxe hotel that charges a rather high premium for what was previously a truly renown level of service.  Now – not so much.  The hotel itself was still pretty much the same with the exception of a garish (and expensive) remodel.  The hotel services are still top shelf – the new design and dining options, not so much.

The gourmet restaurant and bar are now gone replaced by a miniscule lobby bar a remodeled (not for the better) Brasserie.  On this trip we were ignored by a bartender who though it more important to socialize rather than serving customers.  This would be addressed later by the duty manager who graciously apologized for the incident.

On the third night of our stay my partner sat on the bed and it collapsed, clearly having been incorrectly put together which resulted in wooden blocks propping up a corner for two nights until they could properly repair it.  Okay, not really a big deal but rather unexpected.

The piece de resistance came on our final evening while entertaining our friend.  The meal was off to a rough start as the bar could not figure out how to make a Martini.  My poor partner went through three before one was actually drinkable.  But here is where it gets interesting…we were all well into our entrees and I was savoring a rather well-prepared filet de boeuf and was nearly ¾ of the way through it having consumed all of the accoutrements that came with it but suddenly among conversation I spied something that looked a bit like a spice at first but when I looked more closely I noticed that it was…wait for it…a STAPLE.  Yes, a metal un-bent staple that clearly was cooked along with some portion of my meal, the metal having turned a nice dark charred color.  I was shaking and immediately let the manager know who quickly disappeared into the kitchen and return with the chef.  Well, multiple apologies later from a variety of staff an investigation was promised.  The chef maintained that they do not use staples in the kitchen…well, somehow from the kitchen to the table it clearly got in there and truly looked like it had been cooked having lost the shiny patina that a new, unused piece of metal would have.

Needless to say I was beside myself thinking what if I HAD chewed on that piece of metal?  Yes, I am anal about looking at my food (and expirations dates) – always have been.  Thankfully this time it all paid off because my OCD is the only reason I saw the staple prior to ingesting it.

The next morning I was the talk of the town and upon our departure the Head of Operations personally came down to apologize for the incident – which was very much appreciated and I can only hope that their investigation will find out where the foreign object came from.  I can only think perhaps a crate or something that was delivered because the ends of the staple were still straight and not like it had gone through a traditional stapler (for paper).

It was more shocking and unexpected than anything.  I did not eat it so no harm other than my nerves and the restaurant in its defense comped the entire meal which was not necessary as no harm was done and no one else’s meal had any problems.  They need not have done that and I like to believe they will look into the matter so that it will NOT happen again.  I truly hope to hear back from the hotel once their investigation into where the staple came from so that we can ensure that this not happen again in the future.

Sometimes It Is The Little Things

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

I was in a meeting with a colleague (and good friend of mine) the other day and in our discussion we realized that we had not been out socially in a long while.  I am fortunate enough to genuinely like the people I work with so social calls are not unheard of outside of the office.  When this particular colleague and I realized how long it had been, we agreed to get on each other’s calendars for a dinner in the near (well, November – hey, we are both busy people J) future.

Well, I cannot tell you how refreshing it was to see on the calendar invite the locale selected completely by my colleague was a new (to me) gluten-friendly Italian restaurant here in Manhattan.  I just found it sweet that without even so much as a question, she decided upon a restaurant that she knew would be safe for me and make for an enjoyable, worry-free, evening.  Not to mention a new and exciting restaurant to review.  It is nice when people understand Celiac and something as simple as choosing a restaurant becomes a much larger gesture.

So next month I will be dining on gluten free pizza and pasta (and even gluten free desserts) on the Lower East Side of the city and look forward to sharing my experience will all of you.

Can You Really Pick A Favorite Child?

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Let’s face it, being gluten free and fabulous is a lot of work and try as I might to squeeze everything in to a mere 24 hours it is a challenge.  My day job is quite hectic and requires focus and quite frankly allows me to maintain my gluten free and fabulous lifestyle to which I am accustomed.  Oh, I am not going to sugar coat it; GFM is HIGH maintenance but as you know makes no apologies.  Work hard, play harder…what a great mantra.

As I have been gaining more and more readers, I though it might be a good time to do a Best of GFM’s blog posts.  So, I selected some of my favorite posts and thought the best way to share was to shove them right in all of your faces.  To my new readers, I hope you will find them both entertaining and useful.  To my regulars, isn’t the second time around always best?  Here are my top 10 favs, in no particular order because quite frankly can you really pick a favorite child:

1.       A Tale of Two Allergies

2.       I’m Not Hungry. I’ll Just Pick

3.       Fait Accompli, Gluten Free

4.       Sometimes the Most Delicious Things in Life are the Most Dangereuse Dahlings

5.       Not in My Backyard

6.       Living Well in a World Full of Gluten

7.       A Family Affair

8.       Knowledge is Power

9.       Gluten Free at the Office

10.     Fly Me to the Moon

Back with a Vengeance

I am putting the finishing touches on my review of Bette Midler’s New York Restoration Project restaurant the New Leaf Café (the third locale in my QNYGF series) located in Fort Tryon Park at the upper-most tip of Manhattan.  Was I able to do it gluten free?  Well, you will just have to wait for the review to find out.  Having had my parents in town I had to shift focus from my site but now all is back to normal (or as normal as it will ever be) so I am back feet first into sharing my GF journey.

On a somewhat related note, GFM is now back on Twitter.  The Twitter Gods realized the error of their ways in my account suspension and reinstated my account and all of my followers.  While I was hesitant to re-emerge myself in Twitter I decided that being able to reach as many people as possible and spread the word about GF Living is more important than holding a grudge – though there is still a rather large chip on my shoulder but it is quickly fading.  If you do not already follow me on Twitter please follow me at www.twitter.com/glutenfreemike.

As always, thanks for reading and keep Living Well Gluten Free, No Apologies.

Come and Get Your Soul On

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

My review of Sylvia’s in Harlem is now ready for your viewing pleasure.  It marks the second installment of my Quintessentially New York Gluten Free (QNYGF) series which, for those of you unfamiliar, has me visiting some of the most iconic establishments in the City to show that you can be gluten free and fabulous anywhere.  If you missed the inaugural locale be sure to check it out as GFM took on his all time favorite restaurant here in N.Y.C. – The Four Seasons.

I love a challenge (remember GFM is not only Celiac but also hyper-allergic to shellfish)  and cannot stress enough that with just a little bit of research and leg work you can have a terrific meal wherever you like without having to deny yourself.  Hey, we only get one go on this big

An Eventful Weekend

Sunday, September 6th, 2009

GFM had a truly terrific day yesterday.  The second locale for my QNYGF series was revealed but in case you missed it, GFM dined at Sylvia’s, a Harlem landmark since 1962.  You’ll be able to read all about how I faired on the gluten free front in a couple of days, as I am putting the final touches on the review.

Just because I have Celiac is not going to limit me experiencing fantastic new places and more importantly food.  Many of you know that I am not only Celiac but am hyper-allergic to all shellfish which always puts cross-contamination front of mind for me.  As you will see from my upcoming review of Sylvia’s living a full gluten free life just takes a bit of extra legwork – researching your locales before visiting, coming up with a game plan, and asking the right questions.  Doing a bit of leg work goes a very long way in allowing you to get out there and, as GFM likes to say, Live Well Gluten Free, No Apologies.

Call of the Cart, Food

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

In Manhattan we have a phenomenon that is known as cart food or street meat as it is affectionately known.  Now, I am not talking about the dirty dogs that come out of the hot dog carts but rather the wonderful ethnic food carts that seem to be popping up with increasing frequency.  In the small area near my office there are at least 4-5 carts in a 2 block radius.  I am a bit OCD with cleanliness so many find it shocking that I would actually eat off of a cart but, the truth is, many of these carts have been around longer than some of the restaurants in the same area and the daily lines, even in the dead of winter is also very telling.  Many have been reviewed or featured in local and national media and garner cult-like following.

Cart food often reminds we of my travels, walking through tight alleys to sample local delicacies well off the beaten path.  In the NYC one of the most popular types of food is the gyro-like Halal lamb, chicken, or both served over your choice of rice along with salad and vegetables then smothered with both white and spicy hot red sauce.

The crispness of the cool salad coupled with the rich and spicy sauces and tender, flavorful meat really makes for a taste sensation that always pleases.  My craving for cart food is often cyclical and I go through spurts where I will eat it twice a week and sometimes will not have it for months.  It is all about my mood but one thing that is consistent is that I am never disappointed in the taste and quality.  I also do not have to worry about gluten or my shellfish allergies at the carts I frequent (though do always look at the food prep area and ask any questions you might have).  Some carts offer pita that are sometimes warmed on the grill or toss a couple falafal on top but it comes down to the cart.  So, if you are in NYC or visiting do yourself a favor and give this cuisine a try and with most carts charging $5.00 for a large lunch portion it is THE steal in the City.

The Second QNYGF Locale Is On Deck

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

After the success and positive feedback received since my visit to the Four Seasons, I am happy to announce that the second locale has been chosen.  Where will my love of eating gluten free in the most iconic New York City restaurants take me this time?  Well, you will just have to wait to find out.  But fear not – it will not be a long wait.  GFM has his sights set on Labor Day Weekend to see if he can go gluten free at a restaurant that does not cater specifically to Celiacs.  This restaurant will in fact be a first for GFM and I love a challenge.  I promise not to disappoint as we take a glimpse, yet again, into one of the places that makes New York City a foodie’s paradise.  As always, I will be evaluating the establishment on a variety of criteria to measure how it fairs in the allergy (gluten and shellfish) department.

So do stay tuned for updates and I hope you will join me on my journey.  Oh, and in November I am taking the series on the road and going international to some very exciting destinations for some gluten free dining on a global scale.

Eat, Drink, and Be Merry.

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

Well, I hope that you all enjoyed the first restaurant in my QNYGF series.  I look forward to bring you to many more iconic New York City restaurants to show that eating well gluten free is possible no matter where you end up.  Also, I hope that my rankings of how the restaurants faired will prove useful in your own dining experiences.  I had a really great time bringing you the inaugural restaurant and an even better time eating and drinking to bring you the review.

Now the series will not just be limited to New York with Dubai and some European destinations soon to join their New York counterparts.  The international component should make for some interesting experiences.  Oh, and the locales will not always be five star gourmet restaurants but rather an eclectic mix of places that truly capture what a particular city is all about.  The only caveat is that Gluten Free Mike does not eat chain fast food — ever.

So stay tuned for the next installment and I hope you will continue to take dining out gluten free to a whole new level.

Tomorrow Evening It All Begins

Friday, August 7th, 2009

Well tomorrow is the kick-off to my QNYGF series and I am really very excited about this new section and hope that my readers will enjoy it.  While the first location is a secret, I can say that it is indeed quintessentially New York without a doubt.  Now, we all know I am pretty much a lush and do enjoy the finer things in life so any excuse to dine out is always welcome.  Ah, the lengths I will go through for my readers.

On a more serious note this new series is not just about eating fabulous food and indulging in fine wines and spirits.  It is meant to educate and demonstrate that, as a Celiac, you are only limited by your imagination when it comes to dining out.  This exercise will help you to ask the right questions and make the right choices to ensure that no gluten makes it way into your meal and consequently your digestive system.  We only get one spin around the proverbial cosmic roulette wheel so I am placing all my money on fabulous!

Each locale that is chosen for the QNYGF series will be evaluated on set criteria to show how accommodating each place was on everything from menu options to wait staff handling of food allergies. Remember, I am not just a Celiac, I am also deathly allergic to any and all shellfish so without being a pain in the you know what, I am interested to see how each locale handles it.

Finally, I will always be dining with a non-Celiac to help add an additional dimension to the reviews.  I do hope you will join me regularly and find the information useful in your living a fabulous gluten free life!
