Moni’s Natural Sauces and Dressing

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

My friends at Moni’s Natural sent me some of their products to review and I could not have been happier.  Those of you from Texas might recognize the name because Moni’s is served at a host of restaurants down in the Lone Star State.  After tasting these products it is no surprise why Moni’s has been a successful family business for decades.  For those of us outside of Texas we need not worry because Moni’s is distributed across the nation and even has on online store to have their products shipped directly to your door.  Being Italian buying jar sauce has long been a no-no and I can hear my mother saying Just make your own – it is so easy.  Well, easy as it might be, let’s face it, most of us are leading hectic lives and whipping up a batch of sauce is not always an option.  I can honestly say that while there are some good sauces out there very few that are exceptional – many claim to taste like Mom’s but I have found few actually deliver.

I sampled Moni’s famous Tomato sauces: Original and Spicy Garlic Marinara (Arrabiata) and their Famous House Vinaigrette.  First up was the Original Marinara which I used as a base for a batch of gluten-free pizza I was making.  Of course I had to sample a small spoonful from the jar before using and let me tell you, this sauce is in a class of its own.  The first thing you notice is that it tastes fresh.  Yes, honest to goodness fresh – which likely stems from Moni’s using all natural ingredients with their ingredient labels reading more like a recipe card than product label.  The Original sauce is the perfect balance of tangy fresh tomatoes with the perfect blend of spices.  The flavor is enhanced by extra virgin olive which helps take the acidic bite out of the tomatoes.

Next up was the Spicy Garlic Marinara.  This was equally as delicious as the Original variety with an added hint of spicy heat.  The rich garlic flavor really came through in this sauce and while this was a spicy blend, it was not overly spicy.  I decided to bake a couple of chicken breasts in this sauce and then topped them with a bit of sliced fresh mozzarella and grated Pecorino Romano cheese for an impromptu baked chicken parmesan.  I used some of the remaining sauce cooked with the chicken to mix with some gluten-free pasta which made for the perfect side dish.

What goes best with great chicken and pasta – why a fresh green salad of course.  Moni’s has you covered in the dressing department as well.  Their Famous House Vinaigrette is an amazing blend of red wine vinegar, tomatoes, oil, and spices.  It is truly a unique flavor combination and I can clearly see why it is indeed famous.

I highly recommend giving Moni’s product a try and I know you will not be disappointed.  Check out their Web site to learn more about the company and view their complete product portfolio.  You can also find them on Twitter and Facebook.

Don Lee Farms Veggie Patties

Monday, March 26th, 2012

I have said it before and I will say it again, I always love my trips to my local Costco because each time there seems to be more and more gluten-free items on the shelves.  My last visit yielded a really great fine of gluten-free and vegan Veggie Patties from Don Lee Farms.  I am typically not one for pre-made foods but after looking at the ingredients – these patties were all natural and had real honest to goodness ingredients (namely vegetables) so I thought why not give them a try.  Now obviously this is Costco so you are buying in bulk and these patties come in a package of ten.  When I saw they could be frozen I was sold and picked up a package.

Those of you that follow me regularly know that my daily lunches here in NYC are delivery.  I just don’t have the time during the day to pop-out and honestly living in NYC affords me the opportunity to have everything from gluten-free cupcakes to Chinese and everything in-between delivered right to my office.  However, as we all know, this adds probably more calories than I really need.  So I thought, why not try a an experiment of bringing my lunches for a at least a few days (I ended up doing four) and most of those days I enjoyed two of Don Lee’s veggie patties.  At just 160 calories per patty, I was only taking in 320 calories on the main portion of my lunch.

The patties themselves are comprised of: carrots, celery, bell peppers, garbanzo beans, brown rice flour, and sunflower seeds.  The patties are actually quite large and with a bun one would more than likely be enough, but I opted for sans bun for my lunches so had two patties.  These heat up in minutes in the microwave so make for a great, fast lunch option.

It also helps that the patties taste amazing.  They are actually quite complex in the flavor department with the great crispness of the fresh veggies paired with the nuttiness of the rice and sunflower seeds (which really helped take these to the next level).  Great texture and taste make these all around winners.  I opted for a bit of organic America cheese on top and paired my patties with bold and spicy horseradish sauce – kismet.

So next time you are at your nearest Costco, look a bit closer at the shelves because you may just find a fabulous new gluten-free find.  Now if only they would have a dedicated gluten-free section, the world would be a more perfect place.

El’s Medleys New Flavors

Monday, March 19th, 2012

My friends at El’s Kitchen sent me samples of their new Medleys flavors of Cheddar and Sour Cream and Onion.   Now I have long been a fan of El’s Bagel Chips and Medleys since I first reviewed those products a while back.  I was really excited to give their new flavors a try.

Now for those of you that are not familiar with El’s Medleys, they are a crunchy gluten-free snack mix that includes a fantastic mix of flaxseed corn chips, pretzels, potato chips, corn nuts, and bagel chips.  I really liked their Original flavor which was quite unique and their new flavors did not disappoint.

First up was the Sour Cream & Onion variety.  This was a wonderfully tangy flavor combination that paired the tart sour cream with a hint of spiciness from the onion powder.  This flavor really complimented the snack mix without being overpowering allowing you to really enjoy the complex flavors of the bagel and corn chips.

The Cheddar flavor was equally as delicious and had a great cheddar bite to it.  It too perfectly complimented the actual snack mix base without stealing the show.  The other nice thing about this flavor was that it was not overly salty as is often the case with cheese flavors that I have come across.

The fact that El’s products are all natural helps explain why the flavors taste exactly like they read and by just looking at the ingredients on the package – you can actually recognize all the ingredients listed.  I am all about supporting smaller gluten-free companies that are making products outside of the proverbial box and El’s Kitchen is definitely helping to make the gluten-free landscape even more delicious.  You can learn more about El’s Kitchen on their Web site and check out their complete product portfolio – you can even order right from their site and have their products shipped directly to your front door.

New Product Review, Spindrift Sodas

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

I was contacted recently to see if I would be interested in sampling Spindrift sodas which are billed as A Fresh Take on Sodas.  Now, I am not a soda drinker, and if I have a couple a year that’s a lot for me – so I was a bit apprehensive at first.  I did a bit of research and Spindrift did indeed appear to be more of an adult-type soda made from real fruit juice.  So then I began to wonder, how would these be different than the other seltzer and juice blends out there?  Well, let me tell you that Spindrift most definitely proves that not all sodas are created equally.  I was lucky enough to sample the entire product portfolio and let me tell you that just when you think you’ve found your favorite, the next flavor combination blows you away.  That being said, I have rarely come across a product where I loved all of the flavors…until now.

The first thing you notice when you pick up a bottle is that there are actually real ingredients that you can recognize on the label – not to mention real squeezed fruit juice and crushed berries (no concentrate here).  The second thing you’ll notice is that when you unscrew each cap there is the Web address for one of the company’s environmental partners that works to preserve water resources.  The third and quite possibly most important thing you’ll notice is the taste.  Now this might be hard to imagine but take everything you have come to expect from a soda, fruit spritzer, or flavored water.  Did you gather up those memories?  Good.  Now throw them away because Spindrift changes everything.

The first flavor that I tried was the Half & Half – half lemonade, half iced tea, complete with ¼ fresh squeezed lemon.  This flavor was a real stand out.  It instantly transported me back to my school days in Germany where a major manufacturer used to make something that tasted exactly like this – a lemony, sparkling ice-tea with lemon.  This flavor was the perfect balance of rich tea paired with the tart, real lemon juice, in a perfectly effervescent base.

Next up was the Cranberry Raspberry.  This one contains sixteen raspberries, nine cranberries, and a hint of fresh squeezed lemon juice.  The sweetness of the raspberries is perfectly balanced with the tart cranberry flavor and the lemon juice helps give it just the right amount of tangy kick.

The Grapefruit flavor was a particular standout because it tasted exactly like it had just been freshly squeezed and made to order – and it should because there’s ¼ of a grapefruit in each bottle.  It was wonderfully sour (in the good grapefruit way) with just a subtle hint of sweetness from the evaporated cane juice.

Mango Orange was the next in line and was a flavor powerhouse.  The fresh orange juice was paired with a rich Alphonso mango purée that really let the mango flavor shine through.  If you like mango that this flavor is definitely for you because I cannot think of another mango soda that even comes close to this one.

Continuing my way through the flavor portfolio, the Blackberry flavor was next.  This one had a crushed blackberry purée that was perfectly tart and sweet as a good blackberry flavor should be.  It was paired with fresh squeezed lemon juice that helped to elevate and bring out the tartness of the berries.

The final flavor was the Lemonade that touts ¾ fresh squeezed lemon and one-third fresh squeezed lime.  This is a terrifically tart lemonade where the fresh squeezed lemon juice is the star.  The subtle hint of lime helps take this lemonade to the next level.

So, Spindrift will definitely change your perception on soda and provides a guilt-free option for when you want to get your soda fix on.  I know that I will definitely be adding these to my beverage repertoires and I am looking forward to trying them as mixers paired with my favorite spirits.

You can learn more about Spindrift on their Web site where you can also order online and have their sodas delivered directly to your door.  You can also find them on Twitter and Facebook.

Bakery on Main Soft & Chewy Granola Bars

Monday, March 5th, 2012

I have long been a fan of Bakery on Main’s products so was really pleased when I came across their Soft and Chewy Peanut Butter & Jelly Granola bars.  Those of you that follow me regularly know that I am a huge proponent of items that are portable and I can just toss in my briefcase and enjoy on the go.  These granola bars definitely fit the bill.

These chewy bars feature an oat base that is peppered with a host of other grains including: flax; amaranth; quinoa; and chia seeds.  Brown rice syrup and cane juice add the perfect hint of sweetness without making the bars overly sweet.  Subtle undertones of peanut butter add another flavor dimension to these bars and throw in some dried strawberries and crisp rice and these bars are both a flavor and texture home run.

You can view Bakery on Main’s complete product portfolio on their Web site and even order right from the site to have their goodies shipped right to your door.

Utz Rice Crisps

Saturday, March 3rd, 2012

I am a huge snack addict and always on the hunt for new delicious products to help satiate my need for salty and savory deliciousness.  The Little Utz Girl’s snacks have long been a fixture in my snack repertoire and when I saw that they made a rice chip, well, I could not wait to try them.

Utz Rice Crisps come in three flavors (Sea Salt, Salsa Fresca, and Sweet Chili) and I picked-up the Sweet Chili variety.  These rice crisps have a fantastic texture from the whole grain brown rice which also adds a nutty dimension to the flavor.  The chip base is whole grain brown rice flour, rice flour, and corn flour with whole grain brown rice added to the flour mix.   The chips are perfectly seasoned with a wonderfully spicy seasoning blend with notes of onion, garlic and of course, spicy chili.  There are also subtle acidic notes of vinegar that help to add another flavor dimension and help to balance the heat of the spice.  These definitely have a spicy kick but are not overly spicy – though if you more of a mild flavor-type, than I would recommend one of the other flavors.

You can learn more about the complete snack Utz snack portfolio on their Web site and even order right online and have their snacks delivered right to your door.

Glutino Parmesan Garlic Bagel Chips

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

While visiting a new local supermarket that has an amazing selection of gluten-free items (read and entire aisle long and separate dedicated freezer sections) I came across these Glutino Parmesan Garlic Bagel Chips.  I have long been a fan of many Glutino products, particularly their snack items, so was very eager to give these a try.

Now good bagel chips are the ever elusive snack food that Celiacs dream of.  In my experience I have come across very few that make the grade of actually tasting like a real bagel chip – Gultino’s version is most definitely one of the few.

The chips themselves are actually surprising large and, well, look like bagel chips.  They are perfectly crisp and not the slightest bit greasy which is often the case.  The flavoring is a wonderful blend of tangy parmesan cheese that is perfectly balanced with a slight spicy kick from the garlic.  They are also not overly salty which makes them even more appealing.  This box did not stand a chance and I know know to buy two or three at a time in the future.

Glutino’s bagel chips also come in a plain variety that I can only image would make for great dipping given the robust texture of the chips.  You can check out Glutino’s full product line on their Web site, find a retailer near you that carries their products, or order right online and have their goodies shipped directly to your door.

New Cookbook Review, The Healthy Gluten-Free Life

Monday, February 27th, 2012

I recently received a review copy of a new gluten-, dairy-, soy-, and egg-free cookbook entitled The Healthy Gluten-Free Life by Tami Credicott.  Now I am typically not a cookbook-type person – sure I have a few that I have received from friends and family but they tend to sit on the shelf in my kitchen rather than seeing any use.  I often find that cookbook recipes, particularly those that are gluten-free require a range of items that I just do not typically keep in my kitchen and require more advanced planning in the shopping department than I am willing to commit to.  That advanced planning just doesn’t typically fit into my lifestyle but I have to say, just looking through this cookbook, the first thing I noticed is, I can actually do that.

Not only is the book well-written and full of 200 recipes, but it is beautifully photographed with the food photos looking real and not over stylized which is most welcome.  If I am going to attempt something, I’d like a real idea of what the end product is supposed to look like.  The book is the most well organized that I have come across from an information organization standpoint.  It is organized into the traditional meal-type categories along with a standard index at the end but also has the fantastic addition of a pictorial index at the end also arranged by meal-type category.  Oh, and for those of you outside of the United States, each recipe also includes the metric equivalent for measurements making them even more intuitive.

While I do have multiple food allergies I can eat soy, dairy, and egg but I do hear quite often from my readers that they or their family members while Celiac also have issues with soy, dairy, or egg.  Unlike most gluten-free cookbooks this one fits the bill for a range of dietary restrictions and is truly one-stop shopping for those with a range of dietary needs.

While I mentioned earlier that the recipes seem so manageable and utilize normal, everyday ingredients, they also feature recipes that look to incorporate items that might be leftover from previous night’s dinner – like the Chicken Salads (two varieties), Pork Tacos, or the breakfast quinoa dishes (which I really cannot wait to try because I have always really thought of quinoa as more of a lunch or dinner item).  I am also itching to give some of the dips and small bites a go at my next cocktail party — so stay tuned for those results.

So yes, for what I believe is the very first time, Gluten Free Mike is actually going to recommend a cookbook.  You can purchase the book right on Amazon or Barnes & Noble and have it in your kitchen in no time.

Mrs. Crimble’s Sweet and Savory

Sunday, February 19th, 2012

While I was in Bermuda visiting family for the holidays, my mother in-law had purchased come gluten-free items and one brand I had not heard of was the British Mrs. Crimble’s.  She had their Chocolate Macaroons and Rosemary and Onion Crackers – both of which were simply out of this world.  I actually had not thought about the brand until I was shopping in a new grocery store where I was surprised to see the brand on the shelf.

This time I picked up their Original Cheese Bites and Tomato, Olive, and Oregano Cheese Bites.  Ever a fan of savory snacks I was really excited to give these a go.  The first thing that you notice is that these delicate baked triangles are super light and airy.  The other thing you notice on the package is that these are both nearly 50% cheese in the ingredient department.

So on to the taste…

The Original variety is wonderfully cheesy without being overly salty.  The cheese is really what these are all about and the real cheese’s flavor really shines through making these the perfect savory snack during cocktails as they do not leave you feeling as though you’ve have a heavy round of canapés.  The Tomato, Olive, and Oregano variety as equally as delicious with the added flavor notes of, you guessed it, tomato and olive that really shine through with the added woodsy spiciness of oregano.

The only problem with these Cheese Bites is that the bags are small and being so addictive you’ll quickly find them empty – so just be sure to pick-up a few extra bags.  You can view the entire Mrs. Crimble’s sweet and savory product portfolio on their Web site where you can also find out where to purchase their products in your area.
