My Holiday Guide to the City

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

I am happy to report that I will be spending the holidays here in my hometown of New York and I could not be happier.  You see, this is the first time in about 15 years that I have not been on a plane dashing around the globe to spend it with family.  This year Gluten Free Mike’s parents are making their way to the City for a true New York Christmas.  It is also the City where they had their honeymoon more than 50 years ago and celebrated their 50th anniversary high atop it a few years ago.  There is something magical about the City during the holidays.  The buzz is almost electric and from Radio City (just picked up my tickets to the Christmas Spectacular) to the department store windows to Rockefeller Center  – they City really knows how to do  the holidays.

Perhaps it is just me waxing nostalgic but I grew up here (well, the East End of Long Island) but there was a time when I would leave school early and come in nearly every day when I was a budding child actor (big surprise, right?).  My how times have changed and I’ll soon be receiving a Ph.D. rather than a Tony but I wouldn’t change a thing.  It is the memories of another time that make my City magical.  Walking around the City, a familiar sight or smell can instantly bring me back to another place in time.  Yes, things have changed dramatically but some things just never will.

Alright so where am I going with this?  Well, I thought I would take you on a virtual walk through some of my favorite gluten-free or friendly places here in the City.  You may or may not have seen the reviews before but I figured if you find yourself in the City around the holidays you might need a place to warm up with some sustenance (food or liquid) to re-charge those batteries.  So here goes…

If you happen to be arriving at Grand Central Terminal (which is a must to visit during the holidays with its Holiday Bazaar and light shows) fuel-up with a cocktail at the Campbell Apartment.  One of my all-time favorite places to grab a drink.  It can be super busy during the week but weekends are a bit more relaxed.  Their bartenders are second to none and mix a mean cocktail.  There are also light bites available for snacking.  If you are looking for a unique dining experience head to the other balcony of Grand Central and check out Charlie Palmer’s Métrazur.  It’s balcony location affords a unique view of Grand Central Station and you can enjoy the holiday light show right from your table.

If you find yourself in Midtown East for a bit of retail therapy why not head over to the Four Seasons which will be in its Winter phase with decor and food reflecting the season.  They have always been great about accommodating guests with food allergies and you really cannot get more New York than this locale.  I have been dining there since I was a child and would not change a thing about it.  A bit further East is Leona’s at the New York Helmsley Hotel.  Completely renovated and renamed for its matriarch’s namesake it is truly a hidden gem and I have already booked a holiday dinner there for when my parents are in town.  They too have always been on top of accommodating guests with food allergies and the bartender mixes a fabulous cocktail.  Not up for a meal – pop into Harry’s Bar next to the restaurant and tuck into the comfortable surroundings with a cocktail and some great bar nibbles.

If you work your way west to the Rockefeller Center area do not miss the Algonquin lobby bar for a cocktail.  It is old New York through and though.  The cocktails are amazing, the staff excellent, and you might even get a visit from its resident feline ambassador Matilda.  If you are feeling a bit puckish, try the Michelin starred Seäsonal.  I had an amazing meal that was allergy-friendly and overseen by a truly welcoming staff.  I have sent friends there and they too have fallen in love with this Austrian-influenced locale.  They also have quite possibly the most comprehensive Austrian wine list (and wines by the glass) you could hope for.  In the mood for Chinese?  Stop by Lili’s on 57th Street for a dedicated gluten-free menu complete with all of your favorites dishes done gluten-free and every bit as delicious.

Perhaps you’ll be at the Time Warner Center before a brisk carriage ride through Central Park (blankets and cocoa are often provided).  Why not enter the Mandarin Oriental hotel and head on up to the 35th floor lobby overlooking Central Park.  There you will find Asiate where the food is just as impressive as the view.  I had a great meal and the staff were on top of food allergic guests.  If a big meal is not what you are looking for, the lobby also have a fabulous cocktail lounge with the same view and small bites.

Maybe you are more of an Uptown Girl (or Guy) and you want to get your soul on this holiday season.  Well, then you must head over to Sylvia’s – the Queen of Soul Food.  I had a fabulous gluten-free time here and nearly had to be rolled out the door – go hungry.  You want to check out the Cloisters at the tip of Manhattan, well there is Bette Midler’s NYRP New Leaf Café.  While my reviewed experience was not all that great, I have been back several times and if you can get beyond the sometimes lackluster service the location is truly unique and food good.

If the Upper East Side is more your style than don’t miss Peters’ Restaurant and Grille.  An honest to goodness gluten-free diner that has it all from pancakes to Monte Cristos.  This is a must stop location for Celiacs in the City.  It can get very busy, particularly on weekends but worth the wait or if you live in the area – they deliver.  A bit further down is Lumi Italian restaurant which you may remember from the Sex in the City movie.  The food is good and I have always left full.  It is nice that they have gluten-free pasta options.  It is a bit on the pricey side so if a quick pasta fix is more your style head over to Hello Pasta a bit further down and grab some gluten-free spaghetti with your choice of sauce (not all sauces are gluten-free but all are clearly marked).  A little birdy told me they will offer gluten-free penne as well in the New Year.  One of their founders told me all about their training, practices, and attention to gluten-free guests to ensure we can dine without worry.

Finally, what is New York without pizza?  So, my favorite place, Palà, is located the Lower East Side and is not to be missed on your visit to the City.  The pizza is definitely my favorite and the other gluten-free options are equally as good.

Okay, so this was a quick trip around the City.  If you need additional inspiration, check out my Dining Out section or head on just click on the Restaurants category here in the blog for my recommendations and experiences around the globe.

Here’s wishing everyone a truly happy and healthy holiday season and a wonderful and prosperous New Year.

Eat Your Veggies. Product Review, Ellie’s Country Delights

Monday, August 30th, 2010

I recently had the opportunity to sample a new product that I had not yet come across in my travels.  Those of you that have been following me for a while know that I am all about convenience and easy to prepare when it comes to eating gluten-free.  That being said, you also know that I am quite picky and I am not willing to sacrifice taste or quality to get a quick gluten-free fix.

Enter Ellie’s Country Delights – a local (Long Island, New York) company that just happens to make extraordinary products.  Ellie was kind enough to send me a sampling of her product line and I am so glad she did.  First of all, I am not a huge soup person – well at least I thought I wasn’t – but Ellie’s are actually stews and she means it.  Each of her stews is Dairy-, Gluten-, and Wheat-Free.  They are also low in the carbohydrate area and are cholesterol, Trans fat-free, and Vegan…nice.

There are three varieties of stew: Regular Vegetable Stew; Vegetable Stew with Mushrooms; and Spicy Vegetable Stew.  I indulged in all three over the course of a few days and have to say I loved each one.  One jar is actually three servings but I think you all know by know that I was not sharing, so I ate a jar at a time for lunch at the office.  It was probably the easiest lunch I have had to-date – open the jar, place in bowl, done.  Yes you can heat it but I am more or a room temperature type of guy.  So you are probably wondering how they tasted?

In a word DELICIOUS.  No, make that two words – FRESH and DELICIOUS.    Let’s start with the Regular Vegetable Stew variety.  This was chock-full of eggplant, squash, zucchini, peppers, carrot, celery, and onion all in a hearty tomato base.  The balance of flavors is so perfectly balanced that you don’t have to worry about the acidity of the tomatoes overpowering the delicate sweetness of the vegetables.  I don’t know how she manages to do it but I am not going to question it.

Next up was Vegetable Stew with Mushrooms which is essentially the same as the previous stew with the addition of mushrooms which help give this stew a distinct taste of its own.  It is subtle, but the woodiness of the mushrooms really comes through in this flavor.  Again, the balance of flavors is simply perfect and if you are a mushroom lover, this one is for you.

They say save the best for last but in this case it is purely a matter of personal preference.  I love, love, love, the Spicy Vegetable Stew.  I love all things spicy but the addition of chili flakes to the stew gave a wonderfully spicy bite without being too spicy or taking away for the flavors of the vegetables.  That is what is nice about all of the stews – you can easily identify all the flavors you are experiencing.

Now I mentioned I enjoyed the stews cold (well room temperature) but I also used the mushroom variety as a dip with some organic tortilla chips and it made for an absolutely fabulous dip – just an idea I thought I would share.  I am also going to try adding a bit of chicken breast to a jar to make a quick chicken stew on a busy evening.  I am also going to use the stew as the sauce on my homemade gluten-free pizza.  That’s truly the great thing about Ellie’s products – they are so versatile.  Ellie says It’s a meal in a jar – and she is not kidding.

One final note.  One jar is about 150 calories – yes, you read that correctly 150 calories.  I had a jar for lunch on afternoon and it carried me through well past my normal dinner time.  Please check our Ellie’s Country Delights Web site for more information on her products and where to purchase them.  If you cannot find them in your area, just send Ellie and e-mail and I am sure she will do her best to help you.  She is super nice to boot.

The Delicious Secret Is Out

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

Okay, I have been teasing you enough with the product I have spent the last few days eating in order to provide a comprehensive review of almost an entire product line.  The secret product was…Earth Café’s Gluten-Free cheesecakes.  Well, not just gluten-free but raw, vegan, wheat, and cholesterol free as well.  Did that pique your attention?  I know, you are probably thinking gee, that is great that they are basically everything-free but I bet they are free from taste as well.  Au contraire mes amis…that could not be further from the truth.  Well, to be honest, I too thought exactly the same thing when Craig from Earth Café reached out to me and wanted to know if I would be interested in trying them out.  Yes, I was very skeptical because the concept of a dairy free, raw cheesecake just did not seem appealing.  Quite frankly had Earth Café not reached out to me this would have been one of those things that I likely just would not have tried.  I mean let’s face it cheese-less raw cheesecake seems to be a contradiction of terms.

Thankfully I took Craig up on his offer and he and the fine people at Earth Café actually overnighted a sampling from the O.C. on the West Coast to me here in N.Y.C. and everything arrived perfectly intact due to careful packing.  But I digress…I received five of Earth Café’s most popular flavors: Blueberry Thrill; Rockin’ Raspberry; Cali Style Lemon; Cherry Dream; and Peach Passion.  Let’s just say I knew what I would be having for dessert over the upcoming evenings.  Ah, see why this review took a bit longer than usual?

I am, however, only human so I enlisted the help of my non-GF other half so that I could eat one myself and taste a portion of another to better expedite the tasting process.  I started with the Rockin’ Raspberry.  As I took the first bite, I am not sure what I was expecting but it was certainly not the creamy deliciousness that first hit my palate.  I was confused and looked at the container which the slice came in to read the ingredients.  Where was the cream cheese, the butter, the sugar?  Not here and believe me when I tell you NOT missed.  Just twelve simple, vegan ingredients that somehow Earth Café had managed to turn into a rich, creamy, downright delicious cheesecake that’s not a cheesecake.

The raspberry variety was chock-full of fresh raspberries that packed a welcomed sweet and tart bite.  The “crust” was nothing more than fantastically soaked chopped nuts that added overall flavor and added complexity but did not distract from the filling itself.  The crusts are finely chopped nuts and appear to be cashew, pecan, and walnut mixes.  I say appear because I am going by the ingredient list on the packages but clearly Earth Café are magicians in the kitchen so I am not sure if any of these comprise the body as well or just the crust.  The filling was so complex with the real raspberry taste paired with zesty lemon and cinnamon undertones all in a creamy base from coconut and sweetened with agave nectar.

Now here’s where it gets interesting…my other half is not a cheesecake fan by any stretch of the imagination – but I needed help and was dying to taste the Blueberry Thrill variety.  He was still not quite sold but dug in and all I can say is he now likes cheesecake (well, Earth Café’s).  So if your home is divided by the cheesecake fans and non-believers, these products meet everyone’s needs.  The blueberry pie was just as rich and decadent as the first – just chock-full of fresh blueberries.  It is the fruit in these decadent treats that really helps you to understand the taste benefits of raw eating.  The fruits tasted as though it had just been picked and thrown into the cake right then and there.  I know, you are thinking sure it did but I was as shocked as you will be at how vibrant and flavorful the ingredients were – and they never set foot anywhere near an oven.

The next evening I continued to work my way through the flavors with the Cherry Dream version.  Once again, same fabulous base with wonderfully ripe red cherries that were…wait for it…still crisp to the tooth.  By this point in time I had resolved myself that I needed to just stop wondering how they are able to do this and embrace the concept raw vegan cheese-less cheesecake.  The following evening it was time to crack open the Cali Style Lemon (lemon has always been a personal favorite of mine as flavors go) and it did not disappoint.  We are talking some serious tang here.  This was indeed my personal favorite of the lot – so light and creamy packing a tart punch that still did not take away from the overall flavor itself.

Sadly (only because I was now out of slices) the Peach Passion was last in the line-up and it did not disappoint.  The sweet fresh peach taste was crisp and delicious and again paired perfectly with the creamy base and subtle spiciness of the nuts.

If you think raw desserts are going to be boring, I encourage you to give these cakes a try.  I was probably one of the hardest sells but am so glad I gave it a try.  I don’t know how they do it – nor do I question it.  The bottom line is that Earth Café makes a more healthful gluten-free option that tastes, in a word, AMAZING.  My thanks to Craig and all of the folks over at Earth Café for making a believer out of me.

For those of you on the West Coast, you can find their products in many Whole Foods and other markets based on your location.  Check out their Store Locator to find out if they are at a location near you.  If not, there is always mail order.  You can view their online storefront to check out all the delicious options that abound.

And Then There Was One

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

The final space in my Favorite Things series goes to Mama Earth bakery out of Nyack, New York.  I truly love it when I am exposed to new companies that cater to a variety of food allergies and consumer preferences – plus I am all for the little guy making it in a very competitive landscape.  Mama Earth is a small company that makes extremely high quality products that are gluten-free and vegan.  I recently had the opportunity to sample some of their products and was really blown away at the not only the fabulous taste but the real attention to detail that went into the products.

I was lucky enough to try five of Mama Earth’s products: chocolate chip cookies; gingerbread men; nutty seed cookies; oatmeal raisin chip; and mint chocolate truffles.

The chocolate chip cookies were, in a word, amazing.  A few simple ingredients were turned into delicious chocolate chip cookies that were free from any dairy products.  I am not sure how Mama Earth does it but they do not sacrifice taste to be vegan.  I am not vegan (quite the contrary) but I honestly would not be able to single these cookies out as anything other than wonderfully fabulous chocolate chip cookies.

Next, in the spirit of the season were the terrifically festive gingerbread men.  These were sweet with just the right amount of a spicy ginger bite.  Again, for being both gluten-free and vegan they tasted just like the gingerbread men I remembered in my pre-Celiac diagnosis days.

The nutty seed cookies were a truly unique stand out among the products sampled.  These cookies were chock-full of sunflower and pumpkin seeds with crunchy rice puffs that gave a highly original texture.  The sweetness of the cookies was accented with a peanut butter undertone that paired perfectly with the meatiness of the nuts (and the walnut meal used in the base).  I am not sure how they came up with his combination but I am sure glad they did as these cookies are unlike any other gluten-free option out there and definitely one of my overall favorite things.

The oatmeal chip cookies came with the caveat that the oats were not certified gluten-free so they went to my partner who absolutely raved about them (as he did with the other products sampled).  We both could not believe that we were not only eating gluten-free but vegan as well without any taste or texture being sacrificed.

The final product I sampled were the mint chocolate truffles that packed a cool mint punch that was perfectly matched with rich chocolate flavor – and the chocolate was organic, very nice.

I wholeheartedly recommend giving Mama Earth a try.  Head on over to their Web site and look through their product portfolio.  They will happily ship their products to you and you can order directly from their Web site.

Fill Your GF Oatmeal Cookie Need

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

It is no secret that I have a massive sweet tooth. The wide-range of ever increasing and decreasing pant sizes that have made their way through my wardrobe can attest to this. One of the things I really missed being Celiac was the oatmeal cookie – the oatmeal cookie that tasted like an oatmeal cookie should. I have long been a fan of Glenny’s munchies but it was not until I stumbled across these cookies that I was able to sample their sweeter side. So, as my Favorite Things series begins to wind down the number two spot goes to Glenny’s GF Oatmeal Raisin Cookies.

There is something I have longed for since going gluten free – soft, moist, oatmeal cookies. I tend to stumble across new offerings each time I hit a grocery store which is certainly a good thing and shows that we Celiacs are in fact mainstreaming, woo-hoo! However, I am also finding that these products seems to disappear once they are out of stock, sometimes never returning. So what’s a fabulous Celiac to do? Speak up – ask the manager of the store to carry specific gluten free items or simply order directly from the source. Most companies now feature online stores where you can order direct from the manufacturer. Also, in the case of Glenny’s, you can put items on auto-ship which makes life so much easier.

But I digress…back to the cookies. I was a bit hesitant to try these because I have tried “moist” or “soft” gluten free cookies before and, well, let’s just say the companies were using artistic license. Glenny’s get’s it right though. These cookies were just like I remembered, good oaty consistency, good amount of raisins, and…wait for it…the were as soft as fresh baked! De-lish! I highly recommend giving these a try if you have an oatmeal fetish. Oh, and they also have an equally as good chocolate chip variety as well if raisins are not you thing.

My Number 3 GF Favorite Thing for 2009

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Continuing with the Indian theme of my recent favorite thing, I have chosen these wonderful Bhuja Indian snacks from Majans for the number 3 slot in my Favorite Things series. The taste and texture of these snacks will have you wondering Is this really gluten-free? Thankfully, yes they are and they are really unique to boot. I always have a few bags on-hand as you never know when guests will pop-in or when a snack craving will strike.

I came across these snacks when I was putting together my gluten-free contingency travel pack for my previous trip. I actually sampled two varieties but will start with the original variety. What’s nice about this snack is that you really feel like you are indulging in a gluten-filled snack. There are wonderfully crunchy multi-grain noodles (from chick pea, yellow peas, and some GF starches) that are just AMAZING paired with wonderfully flavorful rice crackers scattered throughout. The mix is also chock-full of green peas, peanuts, and sweet sultanas – all in a great spicy coating that has a bit of a kick but is not overly powering.

The spicy variety makes for a piquant surprise and makes for a great snack that will definitely please the pickiest of guests. The spicy version is much like the original mix but features a eider crunch noodle throughout in lieu of the assorted rice crackers featured in the mild variety. If you are a fan of spicy then I highly recommend picking-up a package and giving it a try. These snacks go extremely well with cocktails (making a great little bar mix) as the savory snacks subtle saltiness with hint of sweetness makes for the perfect combination with a nice wine, gluten-free beer or cider, or mixed cocktail. You can check out their complete product line on their Web site.

Number 4, Only 3 More To Go

Monday, December 28th, 2009

I am a huge fan of Indian cuisine so no favorite list would be complete without some tasty gluten-free options that not only taste fantastic but are also super easy to heat up even on the busiest of evenings. I love to have these dishes as sides no matter what I am serving. They all pair well with a variety of main courses so don’t be shy and definitely give them a try.

I was surprised to see this line of Indian heat and eat products in my local grocery because quite frankly their selection is hit or miss and the main reason that I will travel to another market in another town. As many of you who follow me know, I am a HUGE fan of Indian cuisine. It has always been one of my favorites but is one of those things that was a either a restaurant or take-away thing. My mother does in fact make a curry that is out of this world but it is not something I personally would make for myself particularly during the week when time is at a premium. So, I am always on the lookout for quick and easy packaged sides that taste authentic in all their spicy glory. Yes, technically these are more entrees than sides but I love to use them as exciting sides that spice up even the most mundane of main courses.  Kitchens of India most definitely meet the authentic criteria. I don’t want some toned-down version that is tailored to local palates. I want the full-experience that can transport me to the streets of Mumbai with a single fork-full.

To-date I have sampled the Pindi Chana (chick peas with potatoes), Dal Bukhara (Black Gram Lentils Curry), Rajma Masala (Red kidney bean curry), and Navratan Korma (Mixed Vegetable and Cottage Cheese Curry). The Pindi Chana was absolutely delicious. It was nice and spicy but not in an obnoxious sort of way. It had a wonderful bouquet of spices swimming in the rich sauce that was flavored with pomegranate seed powder and tea leaves extract. If you do not like spicy than this variety is probably not going to appeal to you. The black lentils were not as spicy as the chick peas but were equally as flavorful. They had a great creamy texture that paired so well with some roasted chicken that sopped-up the sauce. They had just a subtle hint of chili powder. The red kidney beans were actually very surprising because they were not all mushy (nor were the onions) as I would have expected but were still nice and firm after being heated. Again, this variety will appeal to a wide-range of spice preferences as it was more low to medium in the spice department. I am a huge Korma fan but was admittedly leery when it came to a pre-packed variety. I had vision of broken-down pieces of cheese turning into a gloppy mess when poured into a bowl. I was wrong. I don’t know how they do it but the cheese was swimming in a fragrant sauce chock-full of vegetables (peas, kohlrabi, potatoes, onions, and even cashews) and the cheese was still intact in terrifically firm pieces.I still have a few more varieties to sample and am definitely looking forward to it. You can view Kitchens of India complete line of products on their Web site.

The Fantastic Five

Friday, December 25th, 2009

The fifth favorite thing in my series goes to Betty Crocker for taking gluten-free to the masses. These mixes are easy and taste like the real thing. It is nice to be able to pick them up in your local market particularly if you need a quick sweet fix. While I have a multitude of GF option here in NYC, I realize that this is not the case in other areas so having a mix that is readily accessible to a wide-range of consumers garners the number five spot on my list.

Betty Crocker Gluten-Free Chocolate Chip Cookie Mix
Having enjoyed the brownies, I decided to give the chocolate chip cookies a go. Like the brownies, the prep was very easy – stir in the wet ingredients, mix well, and spoon onto a greased baking sheet. Again, it was all super easy which I really like. The cookies themselves were, like the brownies, a bit flat. Not sure if this had something to do with the size of my scoops but I did follow the directions exactly as they were written. The texture was light and airy and there was a very good balance between crispy and chewy.

From a taste perspective, they did in fact taste like the “real deal” and even my non-Celiac other half enjoyed them as well. I tend to prefer a more bulked-up cookie so perhaps next time I will try adjusting the scoop size to see if these can be bulked up just a bit.

Betty Crocker Gluten-Free Brownie Mix
I have been meaning to publish my review of Betty Crocker’s GF brownie mix for a while but kept getting sidetracked by other sweet GF offerings. I have to start out by saying that it is fantastic that there is finally a mainstream brand out there that is recognizing (and meeting) the sweet tooth needs of Celiacs — and it can be picked up at your local grocer.I carefully read the instructions which warned that the mixture would be stiffer than usual and they were not kidding. After mixing in the wet ingredients, I got a very through workout trying to stir the batter by hand. The prep could not have been easier though, which was a good thing. I dumped the batter into a greased baking pan and had to work it so that it would spread out evenly. Even then, I noticed that the mix yields a rather thin layer of batter. As it baked in the oven, the kitchen was filled with a nostalgic scent of store bought brownies and this is going to sound strange but it smelled like the Betty Crocker I remembered pre-Celiac.The end result, a rather thin brownie but it was moist and actually really quite nice tasting. Betty Crocker was able to, in my opinion, successfully replicate their famous mix in a GF variety. It definitely has a place in the mass market and will no doubt delight millions of children who can now become part of the Betty Crocker generation. For the gourmet dessert aficionados out there, it is worth a taste and good in a pinch but you will probably want to look elsewhere to get your brownie fix. Check out Betty Crocker’s complete GF line here.

Which Came First? The Chicken or the Nugget?

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

When looking back through the past few months of product reviews I came across this one that is a quick and easy snack or meal and perfect when you are looking for a GF crunch sensation. The fact that they are also antibiotic-free makes them even more appealing and baking them in the oven helps bring up the health quotient even more vs. their deep fried counterparts. These will transport you back to an earlier time and their simplicity allows for pairings with more complex and “adult” sauces.

As many of you may already know, I am a big fan of interesting textures – likely given the lack thereof while I was becoming acclimatized to a GF lifestyle. Well, I stumbled across these chicken nuggets on Fresh Direct (a local online grocery delivery service here in N.Y.C.).I can safely say that aside from my own GF cutlet recipe (which you can find on my Recipes page) these are a close second and do not require nearly as much effort. Quite frankly can’t we all use a little convenience? My gluten eating partner has also given them his seal of approval (something that does not always happen, particularly with my GF replacements).I have long been a fan of Applegate Farms Sunday Bacon which does not contain nitrates so when I saw they made a gluten free offering that was antibiotic-free, I thought why not give them a try? Well, I was not disappointed. If you bake them on a well sprayed foil-covered cookie sheet flipping them once one side becomes golden brown – the result is a super crispy morsel that will make you forget all about Mc Nuggets (though as a rule I do not eat fast food). Now, they do tend to stick a bit, even on a very well greased pan, but a little gentle nudging does the trick. After my initial order of 2 packages I immediately ordered another 8 to store in the freezer – no joke. These are great on the weekends or when your other half might have a hankering for gluten one evening. I serve them with a homemade creamy horseradish sauce or my version of spicy cocktail sauce (both recipes to follow soon). Delish!
