Passover Product Roundup

Wednesday, March 20th, 2013

One of my favorite times of the year is Passover – when new gluten-free products tend to flood onto store shelves.  Three local supermarkets in my area had truly amazing Passover sections this year and all were larger than previous years – heck, one market has two full aisles and stand-alone displays set up well in advance of Passover.   This year in particular I tried some really delicious new Passover items so I thought I’d do a Passover Roundup of some of the standouts (and old favorites) that I indulged in this year.

First up is my all-time favorite – matzo (well, as close to matzo as a Celiac can get).  Now, over the years I have tried everything from super-expensive hand made matzo (that, at $10 per board, yes per board, was a disappointment) to mass produced matzo.  When it comes to gluten-free matzo there are really two players, Yehuda and Manischewitz.  I have long been a fan of Yehuda’s plain and onion varieties.  They are large sheets that are extremely crisp and flakey – the do tend to leave a crumb mess behind but it’s a small price to pay.  This year, for the first time (as they are new), I came across Manischwitz matzo and have to say that they even more closely resemble the real thing.  They are a just a bit softer in texture so they are more akin to what I remember good old gluten-filled matzo tasting like.  They also make smaller matzo-style crackers that are exactly the same consistency as the larger boards only perfect for dipping and snacking.  One important note is that both of these brands are not suitable replacements for Passover Seder because of their ingredients.

Another great savory snack find is Paskesz Crispits Flats – I prefer the Everything variety.  These are really great for entertaining because each cracker is quite long not to mention they have a pretty robust texture (making them great for dipping or topping) and are packed with flavor.  These truly reminded me of the flatbread crackers I enjoyed in my pre-diagnosis days.

Now onto my favorite part – the sweets.

I am always amazed at the amount of gluten-free cakes and cookies that pop-up every Passover.  Year over year there is just an exponential growth in the sweets category.  This year I came across some new brands that produce some truly amazing sweets.  Lilly’s Bake Shoppe makes a chocolate roll cake that is wonderfully fluffy cake with layers of rich (but not too sweet) chocolate icing with the entire thing enrobed in chocolate – truly decadent.  I have long been a huge fan of all things rainbow cookie and have had my share of gluten-free versions.  Yet, this Passover, I came across Zemer Cookies and Cakes who make a truly delicious rainbow cookie.  The individual layers are moist and have just the right amount of fruit preserves between each layer.  Each cookie also has just a touch of chocolate frosting on both the top and bottom so you can really enjoy the cookie itself without having it be overpowered by the icing.

Of course one of my go-to brands throughout the year for baked sweets, Shabtai Gourmet, also has an impressive line-up of every possible baked good you can imagine but I am a huge fan of their Ring Tings and Yidels.  They also make a fantastic seven layer cake and rainbow cookies that are personal favorites as well.

Another perennial favorite is Oberlander’s Bakery who make the one of the most amazing assorted cookie selections I have come across (not to mention they make a mean seven layer cake).  Their chocolate leaves and sandwich cookies are two of my personal favorites and if you love black and white cookies like I do, don’t miss Oberlander’s gluten-free variety.

So do be sure to check out some of these brands if you come across them at your local market.  Best of all, in a week or so, the bulk of the remaining items will be on sale.  I have also selected several items from this post and included them in my One for Me, One for You Giveaway (and a few more might just get added before it’s all over).  Be sure to enter today if you have not already.

You Asked For It. Mom’s GF Stuffing Recipe.

Monday, November 21st, 2011

I have to be honest, I am not a huge Thanksgiving food person – never really have been.  Thanksgiving to me was always more about family than the food and our family being extremely close didn’t need a holiday excuse to get together.  I also eat Thanksgiving staples throughout the year when I feel like it so having it one more day really does not make a huge difference.  Don’t get me wrong, I am truly thankful to our forefathers for helping to shape our nation but I’ll take my turkey and stuffing throughout the year and not just on Thanksgiving.  That being said, I do have a personal affinity for stuffing.  I love it as a side throughout the year and will often mix up a batch of simple gluten-free stuffing for a hearty side with dinner.

After having an early Thanksgiving with my Mother, who made her famous stuffing, many of you were asking for the recipe.  So, just in time for Thanksgiving, here it is.  Now while Mom’s is definitely a bit more elaborate than what I typically make – it is still pretty fast and simple to make and takes plain gluten-free stuffing to the next level.

  • 12 oz. seasoned stuffing cubes (Aleia’s is a personal favorite)
  • ¾ lb. Jimmy Dean’s Original sausage
  • 1 lg. onion chopped small
  • 4 stalks celery chopped small
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 ½ tsp. of poultry seasoning
  • 1 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce (to taste)
  • ¾ cup raisins
  • 1 lg. Gala apple chopped small
  • 3 tbsp. butter or margarine

Optional: Pignoli nuts

In a large skillet melt butter over medium heat.  Add sausage, onion, celery, poultry seasoning, and Worcestershire sauce and sauté until onions become translucent.  Stir in apples and raisins.  Add stuffing cubes.  Reduce heat and add chicken broth. Simmer over low heat until all broth is absorbed (but mixture is still moist).

Now there will always be the debate of whether to cook the stuffing inside or outside of the turksy but it comes down to personal preference.  Mom recommends cooking inside the turkey (and trust me at our early Thanksgiving this year it turned out amazing).  Mom always bakes any additional stuffing that does not fit in the bird in a well-buttered baking dish.  You can then mix the stuffing from the bird with any baked separately before serving.  If you are baking separately, just keep an eye on the stuffing while it bakes along with your bird.  Once the top is crispy you can remove from the oven.

To give the stuffing a Sicilian flair (Mom is Sicilian), my mother also from time to time includes pignoli nuts in the mix.  A couple of handfuls does the trick and adds another level of complexity to the dish.

Recipe is perfect for a 14 to 16 lb. turkey.

Mom’s Place Gluten Free

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

I am always looking to support companies that take on gluten-free because of a personal connection to Celiac disease and Mom’s Place Gluten Free is a small company founded by three Moms that is making great products.  My friends at Mom’s Place Gluten Free sent me a sampling of their products including: Pigs in a Blanket/Pizza Bits Mix, Sorghum Bread Mix, Snickerdoodle Cookie Mix, Onion Dip Mix, and Taco Seasoning.

While I was of course interested in sampling all of the products I received, the Pigs in a Blanket mix truly piqued my interest as I can safely say that I have not indulged in what was one of my favorite snack bites since my Celiac diagnosis.  I am sure that many of you out there know that good gluten-free dough is hard to find — particularly one that is pliable enough to work with and manipulate into the well-know pig in blanket wrapped shape without going all sticky and becoming a complete mess.  Well, Mom’s Place dough was not only easy to make (remember, I am completely baking challenged) but remained easy to work with until all the little piggies were wrapped.  These baked up a dream and had a wonderfully light texture and a muted flavor that was not at all doughy but rather crisp and flakey.  Pair it with some spicy mustard (or BBQ sauce) and you have a gluten-free version of a classic hors d’oeuvre that truly tastes like the real thing.

Next up was their Sorghum Bread Mix.  Now I have to admit I was never a fan of Sorghum as I always found the flavor to be not really to my liking when it was the main component of a product.  Mom’s Place however made me a convert.  First of all the prep is completely fool-proof and the bread rises absolutely perfectly and has a light and airy texture versus the well-known cakey gluten-free bricks that some mixes yield.  Mom’s Place bread yields a dark crispy crust and soft airy center.  While the flavor is indeed more on the nutty side it is actually extremely well-balanced so that you do not get the often dreaded sorghum aftertaste.

Snickerdoodles seem to be the gluten-free cookie du jour with most companies having the flavor in their repertoire and there are quite a few really good ones out there.  Yet, I have not really come across a mix for the flavor that was easy to make and tasted great.  Mom’s Place definitely met the bill and the cookies baked up perfectly — just slightly crispy the outside and soft on the inside.

It is no secret that I am a huge dip fan.  I love all types of dip but have a particular weakness for good onion dip.  Many of the traditional soup mixes out there contain gluten or have questionable ingredients so it has been a challenge to fine a dry base to make great dip with.  Mom’s Place dry mix comes in a small package but packs a big flavor punch.  I used a non-fat sour cream and added the dry mix and let it set for a bit in the refrigerator to allow the flavor to really come out (this dip was actually even better the next day).  The nice thing about this dip is that it was not overly salty as is often the case with dry mixes.

The final item I sampled was the taco seasoning mix.  I am a huge fan of tacos as they are a fast and easy meal option.  I do however tend to make my own base rather than using a dry mix so I was a bit weary of giving a mix a go.  I was actually very pleasantly surprised with this mix.  It has a very nice mix of spices that gave it a good flavor with the spice-level being very well-balanced without being overpowering.  I had a bit of the packet remaining and actually tossed it into some sour cream I had around and the mix made for a very nice taco-flavored dip (again, more flavorful the next day after the flavors melded).

Be sure to check out the Mom’s Place Web site for their complete product portfolio and to order online.  They also have tons of recipes and tips as well as their own blog on living gluten-free as a Mom.

Top Shelf Ultra Premium Cocktail Mixers

Wednesday, August 17th, 2011

My friends at Top Shelf Ultra Premium Cocktail Mixers sent me a sampling of three of their mixers.  Now, those of you that follow me regularly know that I do love my cocktails and you’ll often find me at local New York City watering holes imbibing in various cocktails from time to time.  Yet, when I am at home I tend not to be too adventurous in the cocktail department because quite frankly who has the time at the end of a long day to mix up a complex cocktail.  Well, thanks to Top Shelf I can now easily make great tasting cocktails in a snap.  I sampled Top Shelf’s Pomegranate Martini, Lemon Drop, and Margarita mixers.

The first thing that you will notice about these mixers is the ingredients – or rather lack thereof.  Just a few simple ingredients make these mixers a standout out way above the competition.  All of the mixers contain purified water and real cane sugar – no artificial flavors or colors in these.

The Pomegranate Martini just needs one part premium vodka (I prefer Tito’s vodka) and two parts mixer gently shaken and served up or over ice.  I made it over ice and it did not disappoint.  The tartness of the pomegranate is perfectly balanced with the sweetness of the cane sugar and rounded out with a citrus kick of lemon.

The Lemon Drop mixes with the same two to one ratio as the Pomegranate Martini – easy peasy.  This one mixes up a tart lemony cocktail that again is perfectly balanced and neither too sweet or acidic.  I also tried this one with a splash of seltzer over ice and it made for a fizzy treat.  I just added a bit more of the mixer so as not to dilute it too much with the seltzer.

The final mixer was the Margarita mix.  Now I like a margarita from time to time but I am not a huge tequila drinker.  I made the traditional recipe – this one calls for one part premium tequila to three parts mix.  You’ll immediately notice the familiar lime kick that is actually rounded out by a very subtle hint or orange – nice touch.  Being a vodka aficionado, I also tried this with vodka and not surprisingly it made for a great vodka margarita.

I have to say that Top Shelf mixers are extremely versatile and provide a fantastic base with which to satisfy your inner mixologist.  I also love the fact that they are ultra premium in the ingredient department because quite frankly most of the mixers I have come across in the market or liquor store are so overpowering – not to mention full of artificial ingredients that ruin a good spirit.  Each bottle of Top Shelf mixers comes in a great frosted glass bottle that you’ll be happy keeping out on your home bar when entertaining (though be sure to refrigerate after opening).  Perhaps the best thing about these mixers is their price.  At $6.99/bottle with free shipping, I mean how can you go wrong?  One bottle costs less than half of a single cocktail at one of my favorite watering holes here in New York City.

Check out Top Shelf’s Web site to learn more about their line of seven ultra premium mixes and to order online and have them shipped right to your door (they pack them extremely well by the way).

A Very Golden Girl Moment

Saturday, July 2nd, 2011

Okay, so it is perhaps a totally expected cliché but thank you for being a friend.  Two years ago I was enjoying a long holiday weekend when I decided to start a personal blog about my gluten-free journey.  Never in my wildest dreams did I think that what started as a very basic site would evolve to where it has today (or that so many people would even care what I had to say).  Over the past two years I have met so many fabulous fellow gluten-free bloggers, companies, and organizations who have made the journey all the more sweet.

My mantra has always been Living Well, Gluten-Free, No Apologies.  It stemmed from, at one time (10 years back at my initial diagnosis), feeling like I was going to lose a bit of who I was because of the limitations that we sometimes face as Celiacs – and believe me the gluten-free landscape was a very different place back then.  Fast forward through the years and I began to learn that being Celiac did not mean having to compromise – in fact I found it quite empowering.  As time passed, I realized that I was the one calling the shots and would never let Celiac throw a wrench into my lifestyle.

I have since navigated the globe gluten-free and without incident.  Those of you that follow me regularly know that I am a bit of a lush and love living well.  I do not let being Celiac (and shellfish allergic) dictate where I go and just do a bit of research beforehand to ensure that gluten-free will not be a problem.  I have done gluten-free at some of the most iconic locales in New York City in my QNYGF series (new episodes coming soon), circled the globe as a Celiac from Hong Kong to Dubai and beyond and enjoyed gluten-free fare at 35,000 feet.  I have eaten my way through 160+ product reviews and found many great new products I likely would not normally have come across.  I even managed to ahre some of my favorite recipes.  Hey, I even was lucky enough (and honored) to be featured this year on MSNBC.com and later TodayShow.com Luxury Travel.  All that is well and good but the most important and rewarding part of this journey has been meeting fellow Celiacs from around the globe and learning from all of their experiences as well.  I can only hope that my take on gluten-free living has proved entertaining and empowering to those living a gluten-free lifestyle.

My site is a true labor of love and something I devote a significant portion of my free time to.  I promise to remain true to the principles that I put in place from the get-go.  It has been a truly mindboggling ride and I remain humbled that so many people actually have taken an interest in my gluten-free ramblings.  So, thank you all for an incredible two years and for making this gluten-free, shellfish allergic, Epi-Pen-carrying, cocktail drinking guy feel so very, very welcome.

Here’s to another delicious year ahead…and just in case you were wondering I would be definitely be Blanche, but you probably already figured that out :-) .

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

Thanks to the recent MSNBC.com Travel article I have had the opportunity to hear from a great number of new friends with either Celiac or other dietary restrictions.  Hey, I even “met” a fellow Celiac with the same shellfish allergy as me – small world indeed.  I welcome any opportunity to help raise awareness of Celiac disease and as my personal mantra is Living Well, Gluten-Free, No Apologies – I don’t let Celiac limit where life takes me.  Anyway, I realize that many of you are likely first timers here on my site so I wanted to take a moment to say “hello” and thanks for stopping by.  I also hope that you’ll become a regular reader as I am constantly on the go and adding new content to the site.

Here’s a quick lay of the land…

On the homepage you will always find a product and restaurant featured.  The do change frequently but I like to call attention to new products or places that I come across.

You can learn more about what makes me tick and my personal journey in the About Me section.  As you’ll see I am a Research Director by day and, well, as I like to put it a gluten-free superhero by night – which basically translates to I am a bit of a lush

As you move your mouse to the right you’ll run across (literally) the Product Review section neatly broken down by the major food groups Desserts, Entrées, Munchies, and Sides.  Each section is updated frequently – as fast as I can stuff the gluten-free goodies in my gob – so please check back often.

Moving further along you will notice the Dining Out section that has Gluten-friendly and everyday restaurants along with my Quintessentially New York Gluten-Free feature – let’s just call it QNYGF – where I eat gluten-free in some of the most iconic restaurants throughout the City.  Moving along is the Recipe section featuring some of my favorites from my kitchen and those of some great gluten-free friends around the globe.  And yes, even my Mom makes an appearance from time to time – she’s one heck of a good cook by the way and pretty darn cool – we have dodged shady alleys in Mong Kok and navigated the souks of Dubai together – to name just a couple of our adventures.

Continuing our little trip we cross into the Resources & Links section featuring everything from relevant organizations to some other very cool Celiac-related blogs.  Which is the perfect segue into my very own blog full of everything gluten-free from what and where I am eating to my travels.  It too gets updated pretty regularly.

As the proverbial train pulls into the station is the Contact section and please don’t be shy.  I love mail and feedback.  So that’s me in a nutshell.  Welcome and I hope to see much more of you.

Being Social on Your Terms

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

Well it was a marathon 4th with me throwing a gluten-free dinner party and BBQ over the holiday weekend.  Normally I have both gluten and gluten-free options carefully segregated for guest but this time it was gluten-free all the way and I have to say no one was the wiser.  I always smile when I think back to my initial diagnosis more than six years ago and the amount of products (more importantly good tasting products) that were available back then.  When I would entertain, and people heard gluten-free and if offered something they would actually cringe and say that’s okay, those are for you.  Funny thing is, I felt the same way but had not other choice.

Fast forward to the present and in the last year we have seen gluten-free begin to mainstream and a plethora of products, great tasting products, hit the market.  Now when I am eating something gluten-free everyone wants to try it – even if there are a hundred other options in front of them they somehow still want the gluten-free version.  I’ll never forget a little do that we had at the office with pizza and cocktails.  There were literally 10-15 pizzas from the famed Patsy’s here in New York City and I had my special gluten-free version that was ordered for me from another place on the counter and everyone kept going for it.  It really tickled me that even with fabulous gluten-filled really pizza in front of them, everyone wanted mine.

The fact that rice crackers and other gluten-free nibbles have become popular outside of the gluten-free world makes it so much easier when entertaining.  People don’t even give a second glance when presented with a cheese selection with rice or gluten-free crackers.  The selection of gluten-free chips has also come a long way and there is something to please everyone’s taste on the market today.  As for main courses when entertaining – a few simple tweaks is often all it takes to make any dish you want gluten-free.  The gluten-free replacements for things like flour or bread crumbs are really up to par with their gluten-filled counterparts from a taste and functionality standpoint.  Also, there are so many fabulous gluten-free pastas out there that we are no longer relegated to sticky white rice pasta that essentially turned into glue if you left it too long.

So what’s my point with all this?  Don’t let Celiac limit how you live your life.  If you want to be a social butterfly than by all means fly my fellow Celiacs…fly.  Just make smart decisions and go with your gut when it going to both entertaining and dining out.  It’s a big world out there…get out an explore it.  Oh, and don’t forget to get those entries in for my ultra-fabulous gluten-free giveaway.

If It Is The Weekend It Must Mean Entertaining

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

GFM is entertaining again this weekend, though not in Halloween mode.  I was never a huge costume person, which is surprising actually.  I am however, VERY much looking forward to seeing my identical twin nieces (1 year old next month) dressed up as Thing 1 and Thing 2 with their older brother (4) as the Cat in the Hat.

So what’s new with GFM?  Well, this weekend sees my partner and I entertaining yet again…quelle surprise!  We have actually enjoyed relatively quiet weekends as of late which were most welcome.  Our vacation to Switzerland is now less than three weeks away and I am looking forward to a bit of well-deserved R&R.  My gluten-free behind will be firmly ensconced at the Spa at Le Montreux Palace (one of my all time favorite great hotels) for the duration.  Well that’s not entirely true, I will be leaving for a fabulous once in a lifetime concert and party for one of the greatest sopranos of the 20th century.

The pace of Montreux is what you make it and as long as you go before or after the famed Jazz Festival, you are treated to a wonderfully sleepy little town on the banks of Lac Leman that is the perfect hub for exploring the region.  I remember skiing just on the other side of the Alps that flank the city as a teenager and hope to revisit some of my old haunts with my partner.  Though every time we are in Montreux we say we are going to make a plethora of side-trips but just get so caught up in Montreux and its environs that we never leave until it is time to board the train back to Geneva.

For this weekend’s festivities, I am trying to plan my menu for the weekend festivities which is proving challenging as I never serve the same thing to recurring guests.  So I am running through, in my mind, everything that our guests have had during previous visits.  The hors d’œuvre portion of the evening always proves easy as I can rotate through my preferred cheese and nibbles portfolio.  The appetizer, main course, sides, and desserts remain elusive at this point.  I know in the end it will all come together so I am just going with the flow at the moment.  So stay tuned for the recipes from whatever I end up serving.

On Monday I am sampling a new gluten-free restaurant downtown for dinner with a dear colleague from the office (who selected it because of my Celiac) so look for a review soon thereafter.  I have already had a peek of their menu and am SO excited to sample what look to be fantastic gluten-free options.  The place has good buzz going on so it should be a great evening.
