Spending a fair amount of time in Bermuda over the past twenty years I have been able to witness the explosion of gluten-free options available to celiac travelers. Even many longstanding restaurants have tailored their menus to not only accommodate but specifically cater to celiac guests.
On a recent visit, we popped-into Angelo’s Bistro in Hamilton for lunch. They offer traditional Italian fare with the infusion of local flavors and ingredients. While there are many items on the regular menu that are naturally gluten-free, they also have an extensive stand-alone gluten-free menu. We were visiting for lunch so I did not want to go too crazy but I had a hankering for some pasta and there are quite a few gluten-free options.
When I mentioned that I really felt like a carbonara sauce the owner quickly confirmed they could make that happen – and boy did they ever. I was presented with a bowl of perfectly cooked gluten-free pasta that would topped with a robust and flavor-packed island spin on the traditional Italian classic. Instead of pancetta, a local chorizo was used and fresh mushrooms were also added at the suggestion of the owner – it was absolutely delicious. What I really liked about Angelo’s is the small and intimate feel that reminded me of the classic Italian trattorias where menus often do not exist and they cook for you like family.
